Roseanne accused Michael of never taking the time to listen to what she says. As her remarks have put Michael into the spotlight, many have grown curious about his personal life. For those unaware, he was previously married to Jennifer Briner.
Michael Fishman left fans shocked when he decided to split from his wife, Jennifer Briner, after being married for nearly 20 years. However, the former couple made sure that the split was as amicable as possible. While it was Jennifer who filed for legal separation, Michael later explained the surprising reason why they chose the same instead of going for a traditional divorce.
Michael said that one of the major reasons why he did not get a regular divorce with Jennifer was because he wanted her to have the benefits of his health insurance as well after they parted ways. This also seemed like the best option considering they were together for nearly 20 years. In his words:
"Among the reasons for not getting a regular divorce is the shared desire to keep Jenny covered by my health insurance, and allow to slowly unfold our 20 years together in a way mutually beneficial for our family, particularly on behalf of our children."
For those unaware, Michael Fishman and Jennifer Briner tied the knot in October 1999. The duo shares two children, a son and a daughter who were 19 and 16 years old when the news of their separation first broke. Court documents obtained by media outlets revealed that Michael and Jennifer's date of separation was listed as June 16, 2017.
According to the actor, the process of their split was delayed when the production of Roseanne came to a halt. But despite everything, including the timing of their split, Michael insisted that he and Jennifer would remain “the closest friends.”
In a statement that he posted on Instagram at that time, Michael opened up about how all marriages are complex, and similarly, he and his estranged wife also went through several ups and downs in the course of their marriage. And while he and Jennifer have separated, their main priority would be to raise their two children properly. The statement read:
"Nineteen years ago, as young kids, Jennifer and I entered marriage with little more than love. All marriages are complex, with tremendous growth and change over the course of a twenty-year relationship. Goals shift, life challenges us, and our twenty years together have been a resounding success. We are raising two wonderful children who continue to be the focus of our decision-making; they remain our top priority."
Michael Fishman added that their marriage came to an end on the notes of kindness, compassion, and respect. He claimed to make sure that the period of transition for his family was made through love and communication. And with Jennifer, he wanted to make the transition as seamless as possible. In his words:
"We completed our marriage with compassion, kindness, and respect. Opting to postpone filing until after the holidays and the completion of our son's first semester at college. Through love and communication, we are transitioning our family, unraveling the complex responsibilities forged over nineteen years. Collectively, we are focused on privately making the transition as seamless and undisruptive for our family."
