Marjane Satrapi Died Of 'Sadness' After The Death Of Her Husband, 'The Love Of Her Life..'

French-Iranian author, Marjane Satrapi died at the age of 56, and it seems like she was hurt for a long time after the passing of her husband.

Famous French-Iranian author, Marjane Satrapi passed away on the night of June 3, 2026. The 56-year-old Rapher novelist and film director, Marjane, passed away a year after her husband's death. The family revealed that she has been dealing with pain in her heart after her husband, Mattias Ripa's death.

Marjane Satrapi's cause of death revealed 

Once in a lifetime, we come across a love that is so great that everything becomes meaningless after they leave. And it seems like Marjane has been through the same journey, as the passing of her husband left a deep void in her heart. A member of her close circle told AFP in a statement that Marjane passed away due to sadness caused over a year after the death of her husband. She was quoted as saying:

"Marjane Satrapi died of sadness a little over a year after the death of Mattias Ripa, her husband and the love of her life."

More about Marjane Satrapi's husband's death

Marjane Satrapi's husband, Mattias Ripa, was a Swedish producer, actor and screenwriter and a collaborator of many of her projects. He died on April 8, 2025. After which, Marjane founded the Mattias and Marjane Ripa-Satrapi Cinema Foundation to support foreign students who wanted to come to Paris to study filmmaking and make a career in it.

After the passing of her husband, Marjani's Instagram often appeared tributes and how life was with her husband. She posted a series of images spelling out "For I lost the love of my life, along with her husband's photo. She only had ten photos on her Instagram handle, and the posts had pictures which can be read as "I lost the love of my life." Along with her husband's photo, she penned the announcement of his foundation, and it can be read as:

"The Academy of Fine Arts announces the creation of the Mattias and Marjane Ripa-Satrapi Cinema Foundation - Academy of Fine Arts. Created on the initiative of Marjane Satrapi, a member of the Cinema and Audiovisual section, this foundation, housed by the Académie des Beaux-Arts, has given itself the main mission of supporting foreign students to study cinema in Paris. In partnership with institutions connected to the film industry, it will accompany two foreign students through scholarships in their university year. This support aims to promote artistic and pedagogical innovation, and to raise awareness and train young people in artistic creation."

More about Marjane Satrapi 

Marjane Satrapi was born in northern Iran in 1969. However, in 1994, she moved to France and in 2006, she got French nationality. Over her lifetime, she has openly talked about Iran's government and often recounted her early life in Tehran. She has faced restrictions imposed by Iran's Islamic leadership after the 1979 revolution. However, her parents had sent her to Europe to start a life in exile.

Over the glorious lifetime, Marjane directed films which included the adaptation of the graphic novel, Persepolis, which was co-directed by Vincent Paronnaud. She even won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The film was also nominated for an Oscar. Her work also expanded beyond stories that told the tales of Iran. One such film was Radioactive in 2019, which was a biopic about the famous radioactivity researcher and Nobel Prize winner, Marie Curie.
