Yes, you read it right. Directed by Imitiaz Ali, the romantic drama film was theatrically released on June 12, 2026. The film also stars Vedang Raina as young 'Ishar' a.k.a 'Keenu'. Amid the buzz surrounding the OTT release of Main Vaapas Aaunga, here’s how the film ends.
The story of Main Vaapas Aaunga follows an elderly man named 'Ishar' (played by Naseeruddin Shah) who is suffering from dementia and yearns to return to his childhood home in Pakistan. To fulfil his wish, 'Ishar's' grandson, 'Nirvair' (played by Diljit Dosanjh), decides to go to Pakistan. 'Ishar' is on his deathbed, and at the time, 'Nirvair' returns from London to Chandigarh to visit him.
'Ishar' has an unfulfilled wish that he wants his grandson, 'Nirvair', to navigate and help resolve. Through fractured memories, 'Nirvair' gets to know that years ago, 'Ishar' a.k.a 'Keenu' was madly in love with a young girl named 'Jiya' (played by Sharvari). But the 1947 Partition of India led to a decades-long separation, against their will. Back then, 'Ishar' promised his ladylove, 'Jiya', to return to Pakistan, and this willed him to live until he fulfilled it.
'Nirvair' lands in Pakistan and FaceTimes with his grandfather, 'Ishar', who is on his deathbed. 'Ishar', through his memories, guides 'Nirvair' to the family home of 'Jiya', who is now known by the name 'Afsana'. However, things have changed, and the home has been transformed into a cluster of buildings. An elderly woman helps 'Nirvair' to track 'Afsana's' whereabouts, and that’s how 'Nirvair' ends up at her marital house, where 'Ishar' met her.
However, instead of 'Afsana', 'Nirvair' meets her sister-in-law, who makes a heartbreaking revelation. She revealed that 'Afsana' died a year earlier and waited for 'Ishar' to fulfil his promise. On FaceTime, 95-year-old 'Ishar' sees 'Afsana's' portrait, hallucinating a younger 'Jiya' aka 'Mallika Dilfareb', and finally asks her if he has permission to leave. To which, with her trademark hand gesture, she allows. Thus, 'Ishar' gets his closure.
During his time in Pakistan, 'Nirvair' learned about what happened to the women in his family post-Partition. 'Muzaffar Ahmedzai' (played by Manish Chaudhari), who was responsible for safeguarding them, has his house attacked by 'Afzal' (played by Danish Pandor) and his men. They raped and killed the women, thus showcasing how women were the biggest victims of Partition. Getting to know this and his grandfather’s deep love for 'Jiya', 'Nirvair' realises that home isn't a place, but an emotion and works on his commitment issues with girlfriend, 'Kaveri' (played by Banita Sandhu).
Giving an overview, a movie critic wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "Main Vaapas Aaunga is a meditation on memory, longing, and the invisible threads that connect people to places they once called home. Set against the backdrop of the Partition, the film unfolds with emotional sincerity and a quiet sense of heartbreak that lingers long after the credits roll. The performances are among the film’s strongest points. #DiljitDosanjh brings remarkable restraint to his role. He conveys deep emotion without resorting to dramatic excess. #Sharvari delivers one of her most mature performances to date by balancing vulnerability and strength with admirable ease."
The movie critic lauded Imitiaz Ali for this creation. The critic wrote, "Special applause must be reserved for director #ImtiazAli. In an era that often rewards safe choices, Ali demonstrates admirable conviction in telling a deeply personal story rooted in history, memory, and human connection. His belief in the material is visible in every frame. Rather than chasing spectacle, he trusts emotion, and that faith pays off."
