Texas teen, Karmelo Anthony’s 35-year sentencing came as a shock to his loved ones. Anthony has been found guilty of stabbing a 17-year-old athlete, Austin Metcalf, during a high school track meet. Ever since the verdict of his sentencing, there has been an uproar in the community as Anthony’s parents felt that their son didn’t get a fair trial.

During Anthony’s trial, his mother, Kayla, appealed for leniency on the verdict. On the other hand, Anthony also stated that the stabbing was an act of self-defence. However, when the court imposed a 35-year life sentence on the 19-year-old, his parents were shattered. In an emotional conversation with Mimi Brown, the host asked Anthony’s parents whether the trial was fair, to which they said, “Absolutely not”.

In the same conversation, Anthony’s mother, Kayla, revealed, “We will not stop fighting for justice for my son." When Mimi asked them whether they struggled with ‘guilt’ as parents and Anthony’s father, Drew responded:

“I wish I would have been rebellious. I was told don’t talk to this person. I felt like it was just a setup. Since they told us go get white attorneys.”

There were no black jurors on the panel, and the prosecution had dismissed 2 Black potential jurors. The prosecution also claimed that there was no need for a diverse jury, since the case was "race-neutral." But many people thought that race played an important role in the case.

What is Karmelo Anthony’s stabbing case?

Karmelo Anthony’s case goes back to April 2025 at Kuykendall Stadium during a Frisco ISD event. The fiasco began near a team tent area during the meet. The trouble started when Anthony, who was 17 at that time, got into an argument with 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. As Anthony sat under the Memorial High School team tent, Metcalf repeatedly asked him to leave. The initial argument led to a physical fight.

Things turned violent soon, and Anthony reached into a bag and said, “Touch me and see what happens.” Metcalf then pushed Anthony, and as per the witnesses, Anthony pulled out a knife and stabbed Metcalf in the chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital following the incident, but later succumbed to the injuries he sustained.

What happened during the trial of Karmelo Anthony?

When Anthony was taken into custody, he justified his act by calling it ‘self-defence’. During the trial, the prosecution expressed the act as 'senseless' and 'plain and simple murder', insisting there was no justification for the killing. After hearing the testimony of various people, the jury found Anthony guilty of murdering Metcalf. They rejected the claims of self-defence and imposed a 35-year prison term on Anthony and demanded that he serve 15 years of his term to be eligible for parole.

Austin Metcalf’s family is receiving death threats

After Anthony’s sentencing was announced, Austin Metcalf’s family was overjoyed as they felt that they had won the case. But as per multiple reports, the family has been receiving multiple death threats and other hateful messages after the verdict. Sources revealed that the Metcalf family has been receiving death threats, and after the recent verdict, the family was flooded with dozens of hateful messages across social media and text messages to their personal phones.
