On September 22, 2026, the Greenville County Coroner’s office confirmed that Hayden’s death was caused by the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, methocarbamol, and Quetiapine. Earlier, it was confirmed that there was no foul play, and the death has been classified as an accident.
A memorial, Celebration of Life, was held by Hayden Panettiere's friends and family members in Malibu, California, on September 19, 2026. The actress's co-stars and father, among others, marked their presence. Initially, reports claimed that Hayden's estranged mom and her on-again, off-again boyfriend wouldn't be invited to the memorial. However, Lesley Vogel, Hayden's mom, was invited to the memorial but couldn't attend, a source told PEOPLE.
Hayden had been open about her strained bond with her mother, Lesley Vogel, who, following her daughter's death, said during an interview that she wanted the late actress "to be remembered for the talented, beautiful, outgoing, intelligent woman she really was." Hayden's memorial was an intimate celebration, attended by her close ones.
Reportedly, the guests were given hats with her initials on them, and a big screen was presented at the ceremony that featured her photo with dolphins swimming in the ocean behind her, reportedly to nod to the actress's love of marine conservation. Hayden's on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach, who were present with the actress during her last moments, were not invited to the memorial.
Earlier, a report suggested that the Hickerson brothers wouldn't be invited. TMZ later revealed that both Brian and Zach could understand that it's an extremely sensitive situation, and they didn't push back on the organizers' decision in this case. Both of them hoped that the celebration would be a beautiful one. On the other hand, the TMZ report also suggested that Brian has been navigating a tough phase, and he had difficulty coping with Hayden's passing. He reportedly lost 40 pounds and keeps on hoping that Hayden would call him.
Another report by Page Six recently revealed that Hayden's parents, Lesley Vogel and Skip Panettiere, are fighting over the jewelry that the actress wore during the time of her passing. The Greenville County Coroner’s office confirmed that Hayden was wearing stud-type earrings at that time, which were taken off during the autopsy exam.
Both parents were informed of the same; however, they couldn't agree on who would keep the pair. The earrings were placed in the Senior Deputy's locker for safekeeping and wouldn't be released until the actress's parents reached a mutual agreement. One parent wanted the property in Carolina by mail, while the other wanted it in California.
