'Euphoria' Season 3 Episode 6 is here and it has brought some major twists and revelations that have further tied the story together.
Euphoria Season 3 Episode 6 Stand Still and See has finally been released on HBO. It ends with 'Rue' believing she has finally been given proof that God exists. However, while she experiences repeated moments of religious grace, her call with her mother, 'Leslie Bennett', might not be the positive sign she thinks they are. While she manages to impress the federal agents who have been using her as a mole, 'Bishop' warns 'Rue' towards the end. Warning: Spoilers ahead!
As soon as 'Rue' delivers the 3D printed key to 'Laurie's' safe to 'Alamo', he turns the tables on her, saying, "You need it more than I do. It's your plan. Don’t you want to see it through?" It turns out 'Alamo' wants 'Rue' to infiltrate 'Laurie's' base and break into the safe, putting her in grave danger on the eve of the DEA's operation to arrest everyone. She and 'Bishop' are then told to feed 'Alamo's' python, during which he tells 'Rue' the lore about the creature.
'Bishop' recalled there was a dancer at the club named 'Sugar' who loved the snake and used him in a kinky routine. She would sleep with the serpent, and he would lovingly coil around her body. However, one day, the snake stopped eating. Worried, 'Sugar' took the animal to the vet, who informed her that he was absolutely healthy. He told her that the python was actually sizing her up, preparing to eat her. He said:
"The reason it wraps itself around you at night is that it’s sizing you up. And the reason it ain't eating is that it's preparing for a much larger meal."
When 'Sugar' told 'Alamo' that he found it hysterical and bought the python. 'Bishop' concluded, "It's a reminder. You never really know a motherf**ker's true intentions." While 'Rue' reassures 'Bishop' that she won't let 'Alamo' down, he responds with a warning. He indirectly tells her that 'Alamo' was not above hurting her mother if she messed up. The scene becomes one of the episode's biggest twists, tying into the Biblical final scene. 'Bishop' was quoted as saying:
"Good. It’d be really awkward if I lied to your mother...Leslie. Nice lady. Told her how well you’re doing"
Euphoria Season 3 Episode 6, titled Stand Still and See, featured a gorgeous long-take scene in which we see 'Rue' in a church, which, in itself, comes as a surprise to the audience. During her visit, she has a tender heart-to-heart conversation with her mother over the phone, something that brings the big climax home. 'Rue' is in the church because she has to waste an hour while the dupe key is printed, and is honestly surprised that her mother called her at all. That is because earlier in the season, 'Leslie' had always refused to answer 'Rue's' calls. Which is why when she sees the name on her cell, 'Rue' herself assumes "Mom Cell" is the DEA line.
However, 'Rue' gets a major shocker when she realises the call is, in fact, from her mother, 'Leslie'. She told her where she is and that she now believes in God. The idea suddenly becomes appealing to her, given that if God does exist, then so does redemption, and from there, salvation. She begins to explain that she wishes she could undo all of her wrongs. She apologises to her mother, wanting to start over again and promises to be home soon. For only a few seconds, the camera cuts to Leslie, who simply says, "I love you, Rue."
It's a beautiful scene that, when buttressed by the final image of 'Rue' kneeling before a burning bush, seems to suggest that maybe God is real in Euphoria and maybe 'Rue' will make it out alive. However, there is one problem with this: until the snake story scene with 'Bishop', there was no reason to suspect why 'Leslie' had called, aside from the fact that she missed her daughter. But now? Things seemed to have changed significantly.
What would otherwise have been a tender scene between 'Rue' and her mother now seems to have been instigated by 'Bishop's' visit to 'Leslie'. This means there is a sinister undercurrent to that otherwise lovely church scene. It could be possible that 'Rue's' mother reached out because one of 'Alamo's' goons paid her a visit.
The snake also comes as a metaphor for the "feigning love to pounce and the cold open" flashback to 'Alamo's' own mother (Danielle Deadwyler), including him in her evil, elaborate con, and you have to be wary of all these positive signs that 'Rue' is seeing that tell her God is looking out for her. So, while it remains uncertain whether or not God is looking out for her, it's possible that the dry bush in the desert caught flame from a spark caused by 'Rue's' accident.
