The wedding took place on July 25, 2026, in Sun Valley, Idaho. Before marrying John, Emma was in a serious relationship with Garrett Hedlund and even shares a baby with him.
Roberts and Hedlund began dating in 2019 and announced expecting their first baby in 2020. In December 2020, Roberts and Hedlund welcomed their son, whom they named Rhodes. It was indeed a traumatising moment for Roberts to welcome a child during the COVID-19 pandemic. But Hedlund totally stepped up.
A source close to the couple stated that Garrett made sure to stock up the house with everything Emma and the baby needed. However, on the other hand, it wasn’t a cakewalk for Emma, who was dealing with postpartum. Speaking to Harper Bazaar Spain, Emma said:
“I've had some dark nights postpartum. Using those emotions creatively is interesting. My son is about to turn five, and I feel like I'm still discovering who I am, as a person and as a mother. I try to do my best, although I don't always succeed, but I try.”
However, after being with each other for three years, they called it quits. A source close to the couple revealed that Emma gave ‘multiple ultimatums’ to Garrett before parting their ways. The source told US Weekly that its hard for them to deal with the split but they are still trying their best to co-parent. As per the source:
“Garrett and Emma have a great co-parenting relationship. When he's sober, he's a great guy and they've been handling co-parenting very well. It's sad, and they are trying their best to co-parent. It's been hard.”
After Emma and Garrett broke up, there were multiple rumours pertaining to their split. A source close to the ex-pair told Entertainment Tonight that Emma and Garrett had stopped living together and there was also no romantic involvement. Though the split was mutual, the couple’s relationship had been rocky for a very long time. Distance also played a vital role in the breakup as the source also revealed that Roberts and Hedlund grew apart when Garrett was away working.
There were reports of domestic violence too as according to Redditors, Emma was arrested for a domestic incident in 2013 amid her and Garrett's messy relationship. Social media was abuzz with theories that Emma was volatile and abusive in their particular relationship, or maybe it was mutual/or Garrett had abused Emma in a reactive manner.
A user also said, "She had big bruises on herself too. I think they both got physical, but only she got arrested. I’m glad they broke up because that’s not healthy. The relationship needs to be over as soon as arguments turn physical."
