Chris Brown and Rihanna were a highly talked-about pair in the 2000s. However, the seemingly perfect duo were facing issues in their relationship in private. One time, the situation got out of control, leading to a physical altercation. On February 8, 2009, while driving home from a pre-Grammy Awards party, Rihanna reportedly found out about a three-page-long text message on his phone from a woman with whom he had a sexual encounter.
Rihanna, at that time, reportedly got mad at her then-boyfriend, Chris Brown and confronted him about the text. It led to a verbal argument and quickly escalated into physical violence. He then shoved her head against the window, repeatedly punched her face, placed her in a headlock, almost choking her, and bit her ear and fingers, all while driving, which made the situation even more dangerous.
Additionally, when Rihanna pretended to call her assistant for police assistance, Chris Brown threw her phone out of the moving vehicle's window. He reportedly told her that he would hit her even more after they reached home and even threatened to kill her. Quoting his exact words to Rihanna, the prosecutor stated in the court:
"I'm going to beat the shit out of you when we get home...I'm going to kill you."
Following the heated exchange, Chris pulled over the car when Rihanna fended him off with her feet, screamed for help, and managed to escape the vehicle. An onlooker of the incident notified the emergency services about the same. Initially afraid of the consequences, Chris Brown fled the scene, but later that day he turned himself in to the Los Angeles Police Department. Three months after the violent incident, he faced the legal consequences of his action.
Chris Brown pleaded guilty to one felony count of assault in June 2009. He avoided prison time but was sentenced to five years of probation, 180 days of community labor, and a mandatory year-long domestic violence counseling program. Presiding Judge Patricia M Schnegg also issued a strict stay-away order preventing him from going nearer than 50 yards or communicating with Rihanna.
However, maintaining the distance was not possible when Rihanna and Chris belonged to the same industry and often attended events together. The judge understood the situation but still warned Rihanna that she would be found guilty of violating the court's order if she approached Chris herself. After the hearing, Rihanna's lawyer confirmed that she had not requested the stay-away order and it was entirely the court's decision.
Months after the incident, Chris Brown broke silence on the hate train against him. Thanking his dedicated fans for their support and slamming the critics, he stated in an Instagram video:
"Everybody that's haters, they just been haters...I ain't a monster."
On July 24, 2026, Chris Brown appeared at Southwark Crown Court in London and pleaded guilty to affray for striking producer Abraham Diaw twice over the head with a glass bottle. The altercation reportedly took place at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London. Regarding the legal consequence, in exchange for Chris Brown's guilty plea, prosecutors reportedly dropped more serious charges.
The charges included assault causing actual bodily harm and attempting to cause even more serious bodily harm. The singer has been released on bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on October 26, 2026.m for the final sentencing.
