Hema Malini is one of the most successful actresses of all time, as she had enjoyed an illustrious career. Back in those days, it was her love life with actor, Dharmendra, that hit many headlines. For the unversed, Dharmendra and Hema Malini's love blossomed when they were working together in 1970 for the film, Tum Haseen Main Jawan. The duo left everyone impressed with their on-screen chemistry in films like Sholay, Seeta Aur Geeta, and Alibaba Aur 40 Chor.
For the unversed, Dharmendra got married twice. His first wedding was with Prakash Kaur, with whom he had four children, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Vijeta and Ajeita. Later, Dharmendra got married for the second time when he tied the knot with Hema Malini in 1980 without divorcing his first wife, Prakash. The duo was blessed with two daughters, Esha and Ahana. However, Dharmendra’s second wedding with Hema was an unconventional one, and it became a hot topic of discussion in the media for the longest time.

During her appearance on the show, Aap Ki Adalat, when journalist, Rajat Sharma asked Hema Malini about her love story with Dharmendra, she said that she had never thought that she would get a partner like Dharmendra in her life. The actress further shared that when she met him for the first time, she had no feelings for him, but she fell for him much later. In her words:
“Kabhi nahi socha tha that he would become my life partner when I had met him for the first time. I fell for him much later."
Hema Malini never misses a chance to remember her late parents, V.S. Ramanujam Chakravarthy and Jaya Chakravarthy. Time and again, we have seen her sharing old and unseen pictures of her parents from her memory lane. However, if reports are to be believed, her father was extremely upset with her relationship with Dharmendra, but she still got married to him. In the same interview, when she was asked if the reports were true, Hema Malini laughed and replied:
“It was natural for him to be upset because Dharmendra was already married."
Dharmendra and Hema Malini's love affair was all over the news, and they broke many stereotypes as they tied the knot in an unconventional wedding. However, the duo always tried to keep their married life private and away from the media glare. In her biography, Hema Malini: The Dream Girl, Hema revealed that she never met Dharmendra's first wife, Prakash Kaur after their wedding, as she didn't want to disturb the latter. She had written:
"I didn’t want to disturb anyone. I am happy with whatever Dharamji did for me and my daughters. He played the role of a father, like any father would do. I guess I am happy with that.”

Fast forward to today, Hema Malini lives separately from her husband, Dharmendra, but the duo holds massive love for each other. Earlier, in an interview with Lehren Retro, Hema Malini opened up about how she has often been hailed as a feminist icon for her decision to stay separately from her husband, Dharmendra and raise her daughters, Esha and Ahana, single-handedly. Mentioning that her husband has always been there for their daughters, Hema added she has never felt bad about living in a separate household from him.
