Marriage has been a dicey case in Bollywood for actresses for a long time now. While people love to celebrate Bollywood’s lavishly decked magical weddings, it also, in some cases, results in many actresses quitting stardom right at the peak of their careers. While it certainly does not indicate that the husbands of these divas imposed restrictions on them, nevertheless, for some others, it can be a conscious decision. Moreover, a few actresses fall prey to the common notion prevalent in the industry that marriage marks the end of one’s career. Well then, look at some of these super-hit actresses who left stardom post-marriage.
Saira Bano was one of her generation's most good-looking and talented actresses. She became a diva in significantly less time with some of her iconic films like, Padosan, Sagina, Desh Drohi, Junglee, among others. However, she gladly quit the Hindi film industry at the peak of her career when she married her dream man, Dilip Kumar, in 1966. She was barely 22 years old, and gradually after her marriage, she declined her number of films, leading to a complete hiatus.
Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor were one of the most hit jodis of their times. They worked in countless films together, like Amar Akbar Anthony, Doosra Aadmi, and Rafoo Chakkar, among others. The couple realised their love for one another through their filmography and, thereafter, tied the knot in 1980, when Neetu was 21. After her marriage, Neetu bid farewell to the film industry as she fully engrossed herself in the household duties as a doting wife and mom. However, it was quite later in 2010 when Neetu leapt back from her sabbatical and made a comeback with the film, Do Dooni Char. Thereafter, she has been a regular part of films to date.
Ram Teri Ganga Maili fame, Mandakini became an overnight sensation with her mature acting skills and drop-dead gorgeous looks. The Anglo-Indian descent actress had a short career span post her marriage to a Buddhist monk, Dr Kagyur T Rinpoche Thakur, in 1990. However, her exit from Bollywood was not sudden, as many of her films continued to release post her wedding. But with time, she completely moved away from the glamour world.
Former Miss India, Namrata Shirodkar was hailed as one of the most talented actresses of her generation, as she won hearts with films like, Pukar, Dil Vil Pyar Vyar, Bride And Prejudice, Mere Do Anmol Ratan and others. She had a promising career ahead when in 2005, she tied the knot with her Vaamsi co-star and Tollywood superstar, Mahesh Babu. Post-marriage, Namrata quit acting and channelled herself as an entrepreneur.
Meenakshi Seshadri was one of her generation's most demanded and sought-after actresses after she delivered magnanimous hits like Daamini, Ghayal, and Ghatak. Interestingly she was all the more appreciated for her near-perfect pairing with Sunny Deol as the leading lady in his films. While the fans were left gaping for some more of her fantastic acting, she married U.S.A-based investment banker, Harish Mysore in 1995 and, after that, emigrated to U.S., leaving her golden career behind.
Mother India fame, Nargis Dutt needs no introduction. The actress was a talented gem in the Indian film industry. Moreover, she charmed millions of fans with her ethereal beauty, making her one of the most desirable actresses. However, she ended her promising career at a glance after her marriage with talented actor, Sunil Dutt in 1958. It was the actress' willing decision to settle down with her husband and children post-marriage.
Bahu of the Kapoor clan, Babita enacted in only a handful of 19 films when she married Randhir Kapoor in 1971. Interestingly, it was not a willing decision, it was her in-laws who were strictly against Babita acting in movies. Sadly, within a few years of the birth of her daughters, Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, Babita got separated from Randhir.
Late Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia’s daughter, Twinkle Khanna, followed in the footsteps of her actor parents when she made her debut in 1995 with the film, Barsaat. But, her baby steps into the film industry were quite short-lived as after marrying Akshay Kumar in 2001, she consciously chose to quit the showbiz world. In place, she picked up the pen and established herself as a promising writer.
One of the most pretty actresses of her generation, Sonali gained immense popularity with her petite role in the film, Hum Saath Saath Hai. Thereafter, she did numerous films with nearly most of the leading heroes of her generation, making her a big name in very less time. However, post her marriage with filmmaker, Goldie Behl in 2002, she took a hiatus from acting. Within this time, she did a few short cameos in the films, Kal Ho Na Ho and Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobara.
Bubbly actress, Preity Zinta was one of the most-loved and highly popular actresses of her time. Her filmography includes some of the most iconic films of all time, such as Kal Ho Na Ho, Veer Zaara, and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, among so many others. However, post her marriage to her American-beau, Gene Goodenough, Preity not only emigrated from the country but also bid farewell to the film industry. She was last seen in the movie, Bhaiaji Superhit in 2018.
Ghajini fame, Asin became a pan-Indian sensation with many of her films in multiple regional languages. She soon got a label as the next big thing in the acting world with her power-packed performances. But after marrying the man of her dreams and CEO of Micromax Limited, Rahul Sharma, she willingly bid adieu to it all. On the contrary, she focused on being a homemaker and raising her daughter, Arin.
Bhagyashree is one such actress who fits the bill of such a classification quite entirely. In what could be assumed as a promising film career, she was very early in leaving it all right after her debut film, Maine Pyar Kiya. Bhagyashree chose love over career and married her childhood sweetheart, Himalaya Dassani, post which she left the showbiz world completely. After that, she immersed herself completely in being a doting wife and a lovely mommy to her children.
