Shabana Azmi is counted among one of the finest actresses of the 70s and 80s decade of Bollywood. She has worked in a plethora of films, and won countless awards, appreciations and love for the same. A Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan recipient, Shabana made a terrific performance in the recently released film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani and has been heading the headlines due to the same.
In a recent interview with Zoom Digital, Shabana Azmi opened up about the ongoing buzz of her performing an on-screen kissing scene with Dharmendra in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. While the netizens are surely startled about it, and have been criticising the actors for doing such a bold scene, considering their age, Shabana, on the other hand, has a completely different take on it. Expressing how it was nothing to fuss about, Shabana elaborated that it would have been everyone’s dream to kiss a man as handsome as Dharmendra. In her words:
“I never thought it would create such a fuss! People are laughing and cheering when we do the kiss. While shooting it was never an issue. It is true that I haven’t kissed much on screen before. But who wouldn’t want to kiss a man as handsome as Dharmendra?”

In the same interview, Shabana Azmi also revealed what her husband, Javed Akhtar’s reaction was to the kissing scene. She mentioned that he was not at all bothered about it, and on the contrary, objected to her rowdy behaviour due to excitement, while watching the premiere with him. She mentioned:
“Oh, he was not bothered. But what bothered him was my rowdy behaviour. Throughout the film I was applauding, whistling, cheering and shouting. He was like, ‘I don’t know this woman sitting next to me.’ I went insane with excitement.”
For the unversed, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani happens to be Karan Johar’s directorial after seven years. Therefore, the film was quite special, and each and every member of the ensemble cast of the film enjoyed every moment of working on it. Shabana Azmi, too, spoke about the same and mentioned she has been receiving a lot of appreciation for the same. She also shared her excitement about working on a Karan Johar film for the first time ever.

In a recent podcast with Fellowship of Lost Creative Souls, Shabana Azmi went down the memory lane and recalled the first time she appeared for a screen test for movies. Calling it a thorough disaster, she mentioned how she was mis-appropriately decked up, and was caked with an overdose of makeup. She also added how it was difficult for her to even open her mouth and deliver the lines. In her words:
“First time I did a screen test, it was a disaster because they had put so much makeup on me that I could not even open my mouth. There was so much makeup. I was so awful that I said that 100 percent they are going to throw me out because this is not going to work at all. But, I realised that it was because there was so much pancake on my face and that’s not how it should be.”
