Model and actress, Poonam Pandey shocked everyone with her sudden death news on the morning of February 2, 2024. A picture message was posted on her IG handle, which mentioned the cause of her death as cervical cancer. However, just the following day, the actress came online and revealed that she did so in order to raise awareness for cervical cancer. On social media for the same, Poonam also garnered huge criticism from netizens.
Now, as per a report in Pinkvilla, it is mentioned that Poonam Pandey and her estranged husband, Sam Bombay, faced a defamation lawsuit for faking her death for cervical cancer awareness. The Rs. 100 crore worth case has been filed by Faizan Ansari. According to the report, Faizan lodged the FIR with the Kanpur Police Commissioner as he was triggered by the mockery of a serious illness like cervical cancer. He mentioned how the actress and her estranged husband manipulated with the emotions and trust of millions, and requested that they both should be arrested. The FIR report read as:
"Poonam Pandey and her husband, Sam Bombay conspired to stage her death, making a mockery of a serious illness like cancer. Poonam Pandey orchestrated this stunt for her personal publicity, betraying the trust of millions of Indians and the entire Bollywood industry."

After Poonam Pandey's news about her fake death came in the media, in an interview with the Hindustan Times, Sam expressed his joy. He revealed feeling delighted after he got to know that Poonam is still alive. Moreover, he stated that it was enough for him. Talking about his previous intuition, when the news of her demise came out, he mentioned that he knew how everything must have been fine with her, he had said:
"When I heard the news, I felt nothing in my heart. There was no sense of loss. And I thought this can't be. Why do I feel nothing? Because when you're connected, you feel everything. I think about her (Poonam Pandey) every day. And, I pray for her every day. If something was wrong, I'd know."
On February 3, 2024, Poonam shared a video on her IG handle and revealed that she was faking her death. The video was widely circulated on the internet, wherein she claimed that why she did such a death stunt. She revealed that the main reason behind faking her death was to raise awareness about cervical cancer. She also stated that women often don't pay attention to the deadly disease and tend to ignore it. Poonam further urged women to get themselves checked.

Soon after her death news broke out, an interview of Poonam Pandey was shared by Instant Bollywood on their IG handle, claiming it was her last interview before she faked her death. In the video, the diva talked about her liking for surprises. She could also be heard teasing her fans about an upcoming big surprise, details of which she was about to share with her fans soon enough. She had shared:
“Aapke saamne ek itna bada news aane wala hai. Mujhe bahut accha lagta hai logo ko surprise karna. Jab voh samajhte hai yeh sudhar rahi hai, tab mujhe surprise karna aur bhi accha lagta hai. Toh ek bahut hi bada news aapke saamne bahut jaldi aane wala hai."
