Popular actress-cum-dancer, Neliima Azeem was earlier married to veteran actor, Pankaj Kapur. They were also blessed with a son, Shahid Kapoor. However, their marriage had ended in divorce. Afterwards, Neliima married Rajesh Khattar and welcomed a son, Ishaan Khatter into their lives. But Neliima's second marriage was also short-lived, and they have also separated. Since then, Neliima has single-handedly taken care of her boys, and both Shahid and Ishaan have ventured into acting and crafted a niche for themselves.
Now, in a candid conversation with Rashmi Uchil for the book, Raising Stars, Neliima Azeem was asked about her stance while raising her sons, Shahid Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter, single-handedly. Neliima mentioned that she is proud of her sons as they became confident and responsible adults. Further, Neliima was heard revealing how Shahid and Ishaan were very protective of her from a young age. Recalling an incident from Shahid's childhood, Neliima mentioned that a French guy once followed her while she was performing in Belgium. And when the whereabouts of the same incident reached Shahid's ears, who was only six years old at that time, stood up in front of the French guy.

Neliima mentioned how Shahid threatened that fellow by saying, "Before you talk to her, you will have to deal with me. That’s my mother". Not only this, Neliima shared that Ishaan was also equally protective of her, like his bade bhaiya. Recalling another incident from Ishaan's childhood, the doting mother mentioned how the then-3-and-a-half-year-old boy had reacted to one such unpleasant incident that took place at that time. Neliima said that Ishaan clearly told the person, who was getting aggressive with her, "I am watching you. Should I call the police?" and this proves his love and protectiveness for her.
In the same candid conversation, Neliima mentioned how she had no other option than to work during Shahid and Ishaan's childhood as she was raising her kids single-handedly. Thus, she was the only earning member in the family of three. But the doting mommy clearly mentioned stating examples of her sons, how kids of a single parent become more responsible, sensitive, and emotionally caring. She mentioned that these kids also want to ease the financial burden on their single-parent’s shoulders.

Not only her boys but Neliima also shares a beautiful bond with her bahu, Mira Rajput. Proof of the same is often found on their social media glimpses. For instance, when Neliima turned a year older on December 2, 2023, Mira took to her IG stories and dropped a picture-perfect photograph with her mother-in-law. In the snapshot, Mira donned a white-hued crochet dress while the veteran actress was dressed up in a purple-hued kurta teamed with a blue dupatta. The doting daughter-in-law was seen giving a tight hug to Neliima from behind, and the two of them were seen flashing their brightest smiles for the camera. Along with it, Mira wrote a special birthday note for Neliima, which could be read as:
“Happy Birthday Mom. Your infectious laughter, warm hugs, twinkling smile and zest for life makes you the one we all fight to be the favourite of. Yet we all know that your favourites are the grandkids because you spoil them unapologetically and are their Dadi Jaan. Mother, in law, but Mom from my heart. Our girls club reigns supreme, boys! @neliimaazeem.”
