Janhvi Kapoor is one of the most talented actresses in the current generation. The diva debuted in 2018 with the film, Dhadak and hasn’t looked back on her career since. Daughter of eminent filmmaker, Boney Kapoor and superhit actress, late Sridevi, Janhvi has carved her niche in the film industry, be it with her terrific performances, charismatic personality or stunning style statements. However, despite having had so many successes in her career, she deeply misses her mother, Sridevi and often recalls fond anecdotes of her life with her mom. For the unversed, Sridevi passed away on February 24, 2018, after she accidentally drowned in a bathtub in a hotel in Dubai.
In a recent interaction with the Hindustan Times, Janhvi Kapoor recalled fond memories of spending Diwali in the past, along with her mommy, late Sridevi. She revealed that a traditional celebration of the auspicious festival had been a part of her family and added how her mom used to decorate the house every year. She mentioned:
“I have grown up in a household where traditions have been a big part of our family and my childhood. My mom always enjoyed decorating the house on this day. She has always been a very religious person. I guess my investment in all of these traditions makes me feel closer to mom. We would have a Diwali pooja, and on Ganesh Chaturthi we would always meet as a family, Karwa Chauth too is a big one. I guess our Indian heritage, traditions and culture have always been a big part of our life.”

In the concluding segment of the interview, Janhvi took everyone through a description of what an ideal Diwali celebration looks like in the Kapoor family. The diva mentioned that all Diwali festivities, including the pooja and a follow-up dinner, usually occur at her dadi, Nirmal Kapoor’s residence. In her words:
“There’s always been the Diwali dinner at my dadi’s house. There is such amazing food, the entire house is decorated with lights. The entire family gets dressed together. All of us do that and have a good time. A typical Diwali celebration looks exactly like this in my family. There is pooja which happens during the day at either our office or house. For that, I have always seen mom wear a traditional Pattu saree, we would wear pattu pavadai for the pooja. Then for the dinner we would have fun at dadi’s house, eating pulao, rajma, the Kapoor khandaan delicacies. I might have missed the dinner at times, but I have never missed the pooja.”
Earlier, on November 10, 2023, Janhvi Kapoor and her sister, Khushi Kapoor, were seen arriving at the Dhanteras celebrations hosted by Dharma Production. However, what caught everyone’s attention was that the sister duo pulled off a traditional South Indian look in ethnic attire. Moreover, while Khushi borrowed her sister, Janhvi’s outfit, the latter shelled major fashion goals, as she re-wore one of her previous outfits. Well, Janhvi’s pink-toned attire was earlier worn by the diva during one of her visits to the Tirupati temple.

In an earlier interview with Barkha Dutt, Janhvi Kapoor opened up about her mother, Sridevi’s demise. She mentioned how the unfortunate incident brought her a weird sense of relief. Janhvi added that due to all the privileges she was brought up with, she always thought she didn’t deserve those. As a result, Sridevi’s demise made her feel that she deserved something bad. In her words:
"When I lost mom, of course, there was this huge tragedy, there was a hole in my heart. But there was this horrible feeling of ‘something bad has happened’ to justify all the great things in my life and all the privileges and the things that I got easily which I heard my entire life. I thought ‘Ok now something bad has happened. I deserve this. I deserve this horrible thing that has happened to me. It was a weird sense of relief."
