She is the daughter of one of the most iconic jodis of Bollywood, yet she chose to take a break from her acting career to take care of family, post-marriage. We are talking about Esha Deol, the elder daughter of Dharmendra and Hema Malini. Esha is happily married to her childhood sweetheart, Bharat Takhtani and the couple has a lovely daughter together, named Radhyaa Takhtani.
Esha always had a desire to marry a man as handsome as her father Dharmendra, and her wish sure got fulfilled when Bharat proposed his childhood crush. Let's take a look at their sweet love story which has a few bumps and lots of beautiful moments.
They met at the tender age of 13 and Bharat lost his heart to Esha. They were in different schools though but used to meet often during inter-school competitions. Talking about how he fell head-over-heels in love with Esha, Bharat said:
“I studied in Learner’s Academy in Bandra and she in Jamnabai Narsee School in Juhu. We often met at inter school art competitions. I developed a huge crush on her.”
So, what was the most special thing about Esha that Bharat fell for? Answering the question, Bharat said:
“There was a certain freshness and cuteness about her. We began seeing each other.
Everything was going smoothly when the two started seeing each other at an immature age. So, one day, Bharat, out of love, wanted to hold Esha’s hand, which created a rift between the two. Recalling that moment, Esha said:
“But it was an immature, stupid age. Once when he wanted to hold my hand I snapped, ‘How dare you hold my hand?’”
After that incident, Esha got offended and stopped talking to Bharat.
For so many years, the two didn’t talk but Bharat never lost hope. He always loved her and was good friends with Esha’s younger sister, Ahana Deol. Talking about how Esha always remained in Bharat’s heart, he revealed:
“Though I didn’t keep in touch with her, I remained friends with Ahana (Esha’s younger sister). So somewhere the connection remained. I always nurtured a soft corner for Esha. After all, she was my first love.”
After 10 years of staying away from each other, Bharat and Esha connected again, this time to never part ways. They met again after a decade at Niagara Falls and felt the same spark. This time, taking a lot of risks, Bharat again asked to hold Esha’s hand and she, not only allowed him to hold her hand but also never let go of her.
This time, Esha was sure about her relationship with Bharat and this is why she decided to introduce him to her mommy dear. Talking about how she told Hema about Bharat, she said:
“I called out to her and said, ‘Mama, come up! I’ve something to show you’. Mom came up to my floor, casually playing with the dogs, unaware of what was in store. Then I introduced her to Bharat. Both being Librans, hit it off instantly!”
After introducing Bharat to mommy, next was the turn of daddy, Dharmendra. Esha let Dharmendra and Bharat alone for an hour. Talking about his first meeting with dad-in-law, Bharat revealed:
“Dharamji’s seen life. He listed a few things and asked whether I’d be able to fulfill those. I’ve turned more responsible after that meeting. I’ve already fulfilled half of the things from that list.”
Esha revealed that Bharat is not only a good-looking man but also a kind-hearted person, just like her mother. Esha said:
“Like mom, Bharat is raring to go every morning with things well planned. Dad and I are laidback – ‘karenge’ types. Mom and Bharat keep me on my toes.”
Being an actress, what made her fall in love and commit to a person outside the industry? Esha revealed:
“I realised that he’s someone who’ll be mine and remain loyal. I’ve always been a protected child but now I feel even more protected. I don’t feel like a lost soul anymore. There’s more purpose to life, something to look forward to. There’s a companion to hold my hand, haath pakdne wala koi hai. Bharat’s outgoing yet traditional. In a way, he’s like Papa; he knows how to keep his family together. If he can love and care for them, he won’t let me down either. Also, he’s comfortable with my celebrity status. He doesn’t view me as Esha Deol, he knows me as Esha, his friend.”
Soon after their parents met, the two decided to get engaged in an intimate ceremony on February 12, 2012, at Hema Malini’s home. Bharat had never proposed her officially for marriage and Esha always dreamt of Bharat going down on his knees and asking for her hand. Esha’s dream came true when Bharat surprised her with a proposal. Talking about the same, Esha said:
“When we were getting engaged I told him, ‘Baby, you’ll have to go down on your knees and then slip the ring on my finger. Bharat asked, ‘Really?’ and went down in the presence of papa, Sunny bhaiya and Bobby bhaiya, right there. From the industry, only Jaya (Bachchan) aunty was present. She’s like a mother to me.”
Esha and Bharat fell in love and after a few years of courtship, decided to take their relationship to the next level. The two got married in a grand style on June 29, 2012. Esha always wanted to have a love marriage instead of an arranged affair, but not without her parent’s approval. In her words:
“If you find someone with whom you’d be able to spend the rest of your life, someone whose face you wish to see before going to sleep and on waking up, then it’s beautiful. I can’t understand the arranged marriage concept; I had to fall in love to get married.”
Esha and Bharat’s wedding was a gala affair with who’s who of Bollywood present at their wedding. It was a four-day affair with colourful functions like sangeet ceremony, mehendi ceremony, traditional Tamilian wedding and a star-studded reception.
The couple went to Europe for their honeymoon and Esha was more excited for her honeymoon than her wedding. The couple went for a month-long honeymoon, visiting many European cities like Paris and Bora Bora.
Bharat believes that marriages are made in heaven and he feels himself to be a lucky man to have found a life partner like Esha. Talking about how surprised he felt when the two came closer, Bharat said:
“It seems impossible that someone from a film family and I who am from a conservative business family would ever come together.”
Bharat has been born and brought up in a Sindhi joint family with seven cousins. Talking about how beautifully Esha adjusted in Bharat’s family, he said:
“She’s the first bahu in our joint family of seven cousins.”
Esha further added:
“Just like mom’s character in Satte Pe Satta.”
Bharat is a happy husband as he has found the perfect soulmate in Esha, who not only takes care of him but also his family. Talking about the same, Bharat said:
“She takes care of my mother, her moods, she’s gelled so well. Actually, Esha’s always been gharelu though she liked to believe she was the boy of the house. She’s caring and responsible. She’s aware of what keeps me happy. I’m a foodie, I live to eat. And she sees to it that my favourite dishes are prepared at home. In fact, for someone who didn’t know how to make chai, just the other day, she cooked Khow Suey.”
Married for 6 years, Esha and Bharat are enjoying the marital bliss. The much-in-love couple enjoys going for dinner dates. The couple also enjoys travelling a lot. Talking about that, Esha said:
“We also love travelling, we love adventure. We don’t enjoy seeing monuments as much as we enjoy lazying on the beach and soaking in the vibe of a city. Recently, we covered Barcelona, Ibiza and the French Rivera in Europe,”
They are like any usual couple out there who have their own share of tiffs, every now and then. So who fights a lot and who is the first one to say sorry? Bharat reveals:
“I don’t like arguments while she has the habit of repeating things. But I’m the first to make-up, I don’t have an ego.”
Bharat also revealed that Esha is very possessive about him. Talking about the same, Bharat said:
“I’m possessive but not as much as she is. Pakad kar rakhti hai mujhe. I’ve got to be guarded even when I am with my old friends.”
After five years of their marriage, Bharat and Esha welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Radhya Takhtani on October 20, 2017. Esha is currently enjoying being a mother. Talking about the joy of being a mother now, Esha revealed:
“Mamma loved doing things for Ahana and me, and today I understand that sense of joy when I dote and fuss over my little one. It is something that makes you feel complete as a mother. Beautiful Radhya fills up my days and nights. Both Bharat and I are extremely fortunate to be blessed with her in our lives. Radhya is bubbly and always smiling. Sometimes she does mischievous things that instantly bring back memories of my own antics as a child.”
Talking more about motherhood, Esha said:
“Motherhood has also made me imbibe a lot more energy, and the yearning to live life to its fullest. I feel a huge chapter of my life has just started with the arrival of Radhya. Looking into her eyes, I understand why mamma's eyes light up every time she sees Ahana and me”.
Bharat loved the only girl in his life and that was Esha. He never lost hope in love and waited for her to say ‘yes’. Today, the couple is happily married with a cute little daughter. Their love story is filmy and romantic. We wish them all the happiness and love in this world!
