Divya Dutta On Being Compared With Manisha Koirala In 90s, Adds Being Called Vidya Balan's Sister

Divya Dutta is one of the most talented actresses of her generation in Bollywood. She debuted in Hindi cinema in 1994 with the film, Ishq Mein Jeena Ishq Mein Marna, followed by her stalwart lead performance in the iconic film, Veergati. However, it took films like Veer Zara and Train To Pakistan to come into her life, which gave her widespread recognition. In her prolific career so far, Divya has bagged several awards, including one National Film Award and two IIFA Awards, among others. Even at the age of 46, Divya Dutta is proudly single.

Divya Dutta recalls her initial journey into films as a complete outsider

In a recent interaction with The Indian Express, Divya Dutta opened up about her filmography. She recalled her journey into the world of cinema so far despite being a complete outsider to its workings. She mentioned how, back in the 90s, she couldn’t fathom how to take each step forward and always took it as a trial-and-error method. She mentioned:

“It was a confusing phase in my career. You really don’t know where you belong, I came from the outside. It is a trial and error, it actually doesn’t matter if you are from the inside or outside, everyone has their own journey. Somebody will have it easy, some difficult.”

Divya Dutta shares how she was wrongly compared with Manisha Koirala and Vidya Balan

Elaborating more about her journey, Divya mentioned how, at one point in her career during the 90s, she was continuously identified as a ‘girl who looks like Manisha Koirala’. Thereafter, she hilariously added that fast forward to now, people often mistake her to be Vidya Balan’s sister. In her words:

“When I came in, I was offered lots of multi-starrers. Back then I was called, ‘The girl who looks like Manisha Koirala and strangely that stopped and now I am asked, are you and Vidya Balan sisters?’ So, I don’t know if my face changed or theirs!”

Divya Dutta on her experience of working in a majority of multi-starrer films

Incidentally, throughout her career, Divya has been mostly a part of multi-starrer films, where she played a pivotal yet side character. When asked about the same, the talented actress mentioned how she gradually found her groove by only working in such multi-starrer films, and added that she could switch over multiple projects at once. Sharing more on it, Divya concluded:

“I had asked myself, if this (multi-starrers) is all I want to do. I love the chiffon sarees, I love dancing, the Yash Chopra grandeur was stuck in my head and I wanted to do that, but I also wanted to do something more. I did a few multi-starrers, rain songs and felt good about it, but then I thought I had to do something new. So, I did Train to Pakistan. When I was doing a Shyam Benegal film, I was also doing a Yash Chopra film. When I was doing a Rakesh Mehra film, I was also doing a Rituparno Ghosh film. So, for me all those worlds kind of mingled.”

When Divya recalled rejecting a guy’s proposal, who came to her house with a rose

While Divya Dutta has established herself professionally, she remains single at 46. While she hasn’t ever felt left out on the same, she once spoke about receiving a weird proposal from a guy. During her previous appearance in Samdish Bhatia’s chat show, Divya recalled an incident where her maternal grandmother convinced her to at least meet a boy, who ended up coming to her home all well-suited with a rose. Divya then hilariously added that when the guy straightaway informed her of his desire to marry her, she was left in splits and started laughing on his face. Furthermore, she went to her room, leaving him alone. Eventually, the guy himself rejected their match.
