Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleMercedes Reshard New, who is known online as Shawty Dred, is facing serious charges in federal court in connection with an alleged scheme to obtain millions of dollars in food assistance benefits. The Atlanta-based influencer has racked up more than 2 million people on Instagram by flashing his lavish lifestyle, often showing off luxury cars, private jets, diamond-encrusted jewelry, watches and piles of cash.
New has faced previous arrests and controversies over alleged public misconduct, but the latest case carries far more serious stakes, drawing attention from Vice President JD Vance and officials from the U.S. Departments of Justice and Agriculture.
Shawty Dred, whose legal name is Mercedes Reshard New, is a 39-year-old social media personality and rapper from Atlanta, Georgia. He built a substantial online following by posting images and videos featuring luxury vehicles, private jet trips, and an extravagant lifestyle.
On his Instagram account @richlifeshawtydred, New shows off his luxury cars, including a Rolls-Royce and a Maybach. He also has a large collection of designer accessories, expensive jewelry, and other symbols of wealth, and is known to mock people he describes as 'broke.'
In a 2021 interview with Hip Hop Since 1987, New discussed plans to expand his business ventures in Atlanta, including opening restaurants and a strip club. He also joked about his ambitions of 'world domination' and said he aspired to have USD 100 million in his bank account. Now, that very image of luxury is at the center of renewed scrutiny following his federal indictment.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, a federal grand jury indicted New on October 7, 2026. He was arrested on October 13 and charged with 46 counts of mail fraud, 15 counts of aggravated identity theft, one count of SNAP fraud, and one count of illegal transactions involving access devices, bringing the total to 63 counts.
Between January 2020 and July 2026, Shawty allegedly controlled more than 350 fraudulent SNAP accounts, all created by using stolen identities. The identities were allegedly used to obtain multiple electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards, which are issued to eligible recipients to purchase food through the federal assistance program.
The indictment states that New allegedly arranged for the EBT cards to be mailed to various addresses around the metropolitan Atlanta area. The influencer allegedly also enrolled his company, Shawty Dred LLC, as an authorized SNAP retailer.
According to the report, between April 2024 and November 2025, New allegedly obtained EBT fraud cards and a point-of-sale device that was linked to Shawty Dred LLC. The cards are said to have been used to divert over USD 660,000 in SNAP benefits.
In November 2025, New’s store was deauthorized, and he was arrested by local police some two weeks later. At that time, he was arrested on allegations of selling SNAP benefit cards at a store in the Atlanta area. Around 14 EBT cards issued to other people were seized during the arrest.
Over the course of the alleged scheme, prosecutors noted a hefty transfer of approximately USD 4.6 million in benefits to fraudulent beneficiary accounts. The fraudulent EBT cards allegedly helped "siphon approximately USD 4 million from the accounts," as per prosecutors.
For context, the SNAP program is mainly designed to provide monthly food assistance to eligible low-income households. However, through the fraud scheme, the resources originally intended for families relying on the benefits were diverted to these fake accounts. U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg said in a press statement:
"New allegedly stole over $4 million meant for poor families who need help putting food on the table. My office is fully committed to rooting out abuses of the SNAP program and holding accountable criminal con artists and scammers who appallingly seek to profit by stealing taxpayer money meant to feed vulnerable Americans."
FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Marlo Graham also said the alleged scheme involved money intended to support vulnerable families. Following New's arrest, he was ordered to be held in custody without the possibility of bail until further proceedings. A magistrate judge said New may flee if released.
New's case is currently being investigated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of Inspector General and the FBI, with assistance from Georgia’s Department of Human Services.
This is certainly not the first run-in with the law for the influencer. In 2022, New was arrested after he allegedly exposed himself and urinated from an apartment balcony. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor public indecency charge in 2024 and was sentenced to 50 hours of community service.
A pre-trial conference in New's fraud scheme case is set for November 10, 2026.
