After Eric Swalwell, another democrat, Jimmy Gomez is making headlines for facing similar allegations and starting a new political controversy in Washington. He is now among the few other lawmakers facing accusations of misconduct while in office. Although Jimmy has denied the claims that he kissed a younger congressional aide in 2023, the controversy has made people curious to know more about his personal life.
Jimmy Gomez's wife, Mary Hodge, is a politician from Los Angeles. She also built a career in public service by working with former LA mayor and diplomat, Eric Garcetti. Mary has held important positions, including Deputy Mayor and Eric's aide when he served as United States Ambassador to India. However, unlike her husband, she has kept a low profile throughout her career and has avoided controversy.
Mary met Jimmy around 2004 when she was working on different political campaigns. Jimmy was working on John Kerry's political campaigns while Mary worked on Barbara Boxer's campaign, giving them common ground to talk. Their bond soon turned into love, and they got married in 2011. The couple have established a peaceful life in Los Angeles and shares a son, Hodge Grant Gomez, who was born in August 2022. For those unaware, Hodge once came into the spotlight unintentionally when Jimmy carried him on the House Floor during a Speaker vote in 2023 to speak for working parents.
According to a source by The New York Post, Jimmy was allegedly seen kissing a significantly younger congressional aide during a social gathering. The incident dates back to August 2023, around the beginning of the August Congressional recess. According to sources, the incident occurred in the backyard of an event hosted by Eric Swalwell, who is facing similar allegations, prompting him to suspend his campaign to become governor. But Jimmy has strongly denied the allegations. His office clarified that these claims are "not true" and that no such incident occurred. At the same time, the woman named in the incident has also allegedly denied commenting in public about it.
Incidentally, the controversy has occurred amid a larger political storm over similar issues involving Eric Swalwell. He is facing multiple allegations of sexual misconduct from several women and had to resign for the same. It has also sparked a debate over the shrinking boundaries of power dynamics in political circles. On the other hand, Jimmy had distanced himself from that controversy and called the charges against Eric "shocking" and "deeply serious". Speaking on the matter, an insider told the outlet:
"Regardless [of whether] it is a staff member of their own or another congressman, there is a massive power dynamic that fosters a culture of abuse. You have these married male congressmen openly cheating on their wives with female staffers, how is that not grounds for expulsion?"
Meanwhile, Jimmy served 4.5 years in the California State Assembly in 2012, representing the 51st district. Later, he was elected to Congress in 2017. He also served as chair of the Appropriations Committee, where he spoke on issues such as paid family leave and climate policy. All these issues he raised eventually made him a strong voice for working-class families. In fact, he also founded the Congressional Dad Caucus to promote family-friendly policies in the government.
