Former First Lady, Jill Biden's ex-husband, William Stevenson, has been arrested for mu***ring his current wife, Linda Stevenson. Amid this, know about the man behind the shocking incident.
Recently, a crim**al case in Delaware made headlines and sent shockwaves across the country. The reason for this is that it has a surprising connection to the former US First Lady, Jill Biden. Yes, you read that right! According to reports, William Stevenson, who happens to be the ex-husband of Jill Biden, has been accused of mu***r in connection with the death of his current wife, Linda Stevenson. It was on Monday, February 2, 2026, that the 77-year-old was charged with first-degree mu***r regarding the death of his 64-year-old wife.
It is worth noting that Stevenson was apprehended after more than a month-long police inquiry and a grand jury indictment. Officials from the New Castle County Division of Police revealed this on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. According to CBS News, as soon as the verdict was reached, Stevenson was taken into custody. The news outlet further reported that Joe Biden's post-presidential office refused to comment on Stevenson's arrest or the charges brought against him. Although the news of Jill Biden's ex-husband, William Stevenson mu***ring his current wife is hogging the spotlight at present, the unfortunate incident reportedly took place last year, on December 28, 2025. On the fateful day, the New Castle police responded to a report of a domestic dispute at the couple's home near the town of Elsmere, Delaware. However, when the police arrived at the Stevensons’ home, they no longer had a domestic dispute to solve. Instead, they found themselves face-to-face with an unresponsive Linda Stevenson in the living room.
According to the officials, despite them trying their best efforts to revive Linda using life-saving measures, they failed, and she was pronounced dead. As of now, her cause of death has yet to be revealed by the police, although according to a press release which was issued at the time, her remains were handed over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science for an autopsy. Even in the statement regarding William Stevenson's arrest, Linda's cause of death did not make an appearance.
It is worth noting that while the police did not immediately file any charges when Linda's death was investigated, after an extensive investigation into the case, William was finally inducted of first degree mu***r earlier this week. Following his arrest, he was placed in a state prison in Wilmington, Delaware. According to a report by The New York Times, the police revealed that William was unable to post the USD 500,000 bail.
If reports are believed to be true, William Stevenson was raised outside Philadelphia. As a young man, he aspired to become a college football star. However, he ultimately had to reconsider attending Ohio State University and pursuing his dreams due to several family challenges. Later, in an interview with a local cable channel, it was revealed that he ended up attending the University of Delaware instead.
Back in 1971, he made the bold decision to use the USD 14,000 inheritance, which he got from his uncle, to buy a bar in Newark, Delaware. Named The Stone Balloon Club, it quickly became a popular spot since it was located near the University of Delaware. Reportedly, several well-known musicians, such as Bruce Springsteen, Dace Matthews, and The Allman Brothers Band, performed for crowds at William's bar for decades.
Apparently, at the time, William Stevenson kept finding himself in the middle of disputes with city officials over construction permits. Reports from local newspapers from the same time also suggested that he struggled to pay his taxes. Eventually, he had to sell his bar, which closed in 2005. Notably, a report by International Business Times claimed that William has no prior crim**al history.
Reports suggest that William Stevenson's wife, Linda Stevenson, was a mother and a grandmother. In her obituary, she was described as a kind-hearted and fiercely loyal person. It further stated that the 64-year-old was a big Philadelphia Eagles fan on top of being “deeply family-oriented." According to NBC News, her obituary also revealed that she was the owner of a small bookkeeping business in what would become the final years of her life.
Linda Stevenson was deeply loved in her community. This can be proved by the fact that a neighbour placed a "Justice for Linda” sign outside her and Williams' residence, CBS News reported on February 3, 2026. Patty Master, another one of her neighbours, told the news outlet:
"She [Linda] was as nice as can be, and he [William] was, too.”
William Stevenson first met Jill Biden, then known as Jill Tracy Jacobs, on a beach in 1969. Just a year later, the duo tied the knot in 1970. They were both pretty young when they got married: Jill was 18 and a student at the University of Delaware, while William was 23. Sadly, only 5 years into their married life, they decided to go their separate ways. Notably, a civil divorce between Jill and William Stevenson was granted in May 1975. Not long after their divorce, Jill moved on by dating former US President, Joe Biden. Interestingly, Joe was not only a senator from Delaware at the time but also an acquaintance of William. Looking back at her marriage to William, Jill later confessed:
“I truly believed we were destined for each other. Looking back, it may seem like a mistake of youth.”
