The drama reveals the dark inner thoughts and workings of a turbulent relationship and the decisions that led to the chilling crime. In the show's synopsis, Netflix says, "In this retelling of a real case, a former escort discovers her wealthy husband's infidelity and struggles to cope as betrayal poisons their marriage."
The drama picks up from the story of the 2021 Netflix documentary Elize Matsunaga: Once Upon a Crime, which features her first interview following the disturbing events. And now, the show has further reflected on what happened between Elize Matsunaga and Marcos Kitano Matsunaga that led to the latter's horrifying death.
For the unversed, in 2012, a Brazilian woman named Elize Matsunaga hit the headlines after she shot her husband, Marcos Kitano Matsunaga. However, that was not the most disturbing part of the entire incident. The gut-wrenching revelation came when it was revealed that she dismembered his body and scattered the parts in a wooded area outside Sao Paulo.
According to reports, Elize Matsunaga had killed her husband in her apartment and later scattered his remains. However, during the incident, the police found his body parts in plastic bags along a road in Cotia, about 30 kilometres outside the city. Nonetheless, what could possibly lead a wife to brutally murder her husband?
The documentary reveals that Elize had hired a private investigator to follow her husband and collect evidence that he was cheating on her. Once she had the proof she needed, Elize Matsunaga confronted her husabnd about the affair, which had previously been a problem in their marriage. Things soon escalated and resulted in the death of Marcos Kitano Matsunaga
In 2016, Elize Matsunaga, who was a trained nurse and had a daughter, was convicted of the murder. She had initially reported Marcos Kitano Matsunaga missing, but confessed to the murder a few weeks later. She was sentenced to almost 20 years in prison, which was eventually reduced to 16 years in 2019.
As for Elize Matsunaga's whereabouts, after serving 10 years of her sentence, she was released on parole in 2022. The Netflix documentary Elize: Shadows of a Woman goes on to reveal the Matsunaga family wishes to disassociate themselves by "removing Elize's surname".
While she dreamed of seeing her daughter again, she has gone completely no contact with her mother, not even allowing her to see her pictures. Her child, who was only a year old when the murder happened, remains in the care of Marcos Kitano Matsunaga's parents, who have full custody of her.
