After multiple delays, Yash made a long-awaited return on the big screen with Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups. Immediately after its release, the film sparked many discussions over its grand scale, intense action and VFX. However, the biggest surprise of the film has been its shocking ending. Initially, the Geetu Mohandas directorial takes viewers on a dark journey of power, betrayal, family, and guilt before catching them off guard with the final twist. Let's closely understand the exact meaning of Toxic's ending.
Toxic is set in the final years of Portuguese rule in Goa. It follows the journey of 'Raya', played by Yash, who is a feared gangster. After a difficult childhood, he and his ambitious sister, 'Ganga', played by Nayanthara, aim to build a massive criminal empire. They both want power and control. It leads them into illegal trade, politics, violence.
After strengthening his position in the town, 'Raya' has to enter a strategic marriage with 'Rebecca', played by Tara Sutaria. She is the daughter of a powerful crime boss 'Salvador'. However, things become complex when he falls in love with 'Nadia', played by Kiara Advani. Soon, 'Raya' finds himself at a crossroads between love and his long-aspired ambition for power.
Everything once again takes a major turn when the film later takes a leap and introduces 'Ticket', who is 'Raya' and 'Nadia's' son. He serves as the narrator of the story and the character is also played by Yash. 'Ticket' takes audiences through events from the past and how his father expanded his business empire.
Eventually, the story moves several years ahead. 'Raya' has now become a powerful figure in the underworld. He soon gets rid of 'Salvador' and takes over his gang. 'Raya' forms new connections outside Goa, even going to Macau. Despite his professional success, his personal life falls apart. 'Ticket's' grows distant from his father after a traumatic incident, and they develop an estranged bond.
Throughout the film, 'Ticket' is on a mission to destroy everything his father built. He challenges 'Raya's' authority and even kidnaps his brother, 'Adam', for the revenge against the pain he had to endure as a child. Later, 'Ticket' got an opportunity to kill 'Raya', but he was unable to do it. So, he unexpectedly saved his father in an emotional moment.
The biggest twist comes towards the end of the film. Audiences find that 'Ticket' was never really present during most of the events shown in the film. Shockingly, the character who narrated the story and actively acted against 'Raya' was not his son. Instead, it was a creation of 'Raya's' fractured mind.
Since 'Raya' killed 'Ticket' several years ago, he eventually regretted his actions. Although he tried to save his son, it was too late. As a result, he was unable to bear the guilt and created an imaginary version of 'Ticket' that persisted in his mind for many years.
The twist gives the whole film new context. Most of the incidents and fights with 'Ticket' were not external battles. Rather, 'Raya' was found to be wrestling with his inner demons. Hence, it was 'Raya' all along who destroyed his empire due to guilt, trauma and unresolved grief.
These feelings slowly entered his life, harmed his relationships, family and criminal organisation. At the same time, when 'Raya' loses the people close to him, including 'Ganga' and 'Nadia', it further affects his mental health. At the end, he realised the truth about 'Ticket' and the impact of his self-destruction.
The ending of Toxic was intentionally left open by the makers for interpretation. Practically, it suggests that 'Raya' lost his control over reality. But after suppressing his guilt for years, 'Raya' had to eventually face it. So, the imaginary version of 'Ticket' represents the son that 'Raya' failed to protect. He made that imagination in his mind because he was unable to overcome the emotional burden of his deeds.
During the film's final moments, viewers see an avalanche racing towards 'Raya', he hallucinates and seemingly embraces a young 'Ticket' for the first time. It was a symbolic act that he did not run, but accepted his mistakes. Overall, the climax suggests that 'Raya's' greatest rival was not any other gangster or rival empire, but his own guilt and regret, which he continued to carry within himself.
