Amid the premiere of the true crime documentary, 'The Crash' on Netflix on May 15, 2026, here's a look at where Mackenzie Shrilla, the 17-year-old found guilty of murdering her boyfriend, is now.
The true-crime documentary, The Crash, has been generating a lot of buzz since it premiered on Netflix on May 15, 2026. Those who have already watched the documentary have been describing it as a hard watch, as it tells us the story of a 17-year-old girl named Mackenzie Shirilla, who is guilty of murder and deserves to “sit in a cage for a long time, because of what she did,” as one law officer who investigated her case puts it. Amid this, if you are curious to find out where Mackenzie Shirilla from The Crash is now, we have got you covered.
The Crash, which is directed by Gareth Johnson, walks its viewers through a criminal case of a 2022 car crash which took place in Strongsville, Ohio. According to reports, at the time, a girl named Mackenzie Shirilla was driving her boyfriend, Dom, and his friend, Davion, home from a friend's house early in the morning when she crashed the car into a brick building. Because she was driving over 100 miles per hour, the crash resulted in the deaths of both Dom and Davion. However, the 17-year-old Mackenzie survived.
After a toxicology test was done and the reports revealed that Mackenzie had no alcohol in her system, police began to investigate the case as murder. It is worth noting that the prosecution in Mackenzie's case used her persona as an influencer as criminal evidence in court that she intentionally murdered her boyfriend and his friend. Well, the prosecution did end up winning the case, as after Mackenzie's trial in 2023, the judge, Nancy Margaret Russo, concluded that the car crash was premeditated. As per reports, Mackenzie was found guilty of 12 felony charges, including two counts of murder.
According to a report by Decider, at present, Mackenzie Shirilla is serving her 15-to-life prison sentence at the Ohio Reformatory for Women, which is a state prison located in Marysville, OH. Her first parole hearing will be over a decade later, in September 2037. This will be about 14 years since she was sentenced on August 31, 2023. Currently, Mackenzie is 21 years old. She has already spent nearly 3 years in prison after she was found guilty of two counts of murder, in addition to being found guilty of counts of assault, aggravated vehicular homicide, drug possession, and criminal tools possession.
It is worth noting that in September 2023, not long after Mackenzie was sentenced, her legal team appealed her verdict. According to them, there were clinical errors and a lack of evidence presented by the court. At the time, Cuyahoga County Judge, Nancy Margaret Russo swiftly denied the appeal, claiming that it had come too late. However, in March 2026, the appeal was upheld after a review revealed that the appeal had come just one day too late after the 365-day deadline. They stated:
“Shirilla’s postconviction relief petition was filed on the 366th day following the filing of her trial transcript. Accordingly, we find that the trial court correctly determined it was without jurisdiction to consider the petition.”
In The Crash on Netflix, viewers get to see Mackenzie Shirilla's first-ever interview from prison. Reportedly, the interview was conducted with her lawyer present off-camera. When she was asked why she agreed to do the interview, Mackenzie said:
“I’ve never spoke before, and I’ve never told my side of the story. I understand there’s many different sides to the story and different perspectives, but I just wanna say my truth. I just know myself, and I know I’m not a monster.”
