However, at the last minute, fans of Suriya got disheartened when all the shows for May 14, 2026, got cancelled. Back then, reports stated that due to unforeseen and financial reasons, the shows got cancelled. However, fans didn’t have to wait long as the film finally hit the theatres on May 15, 2026. In a recent interview, Suriya broke his silence on the last-minute cancellation of Karuppu shows.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Suriya and Jyotika were asked about Karuppu’s last-minute delay in release. In response, Suriya admitted that there was a lot of financial burden. He credited Jyotika for supporting him during that phase. In his words:
"It was a lot of financial burden on me which came at the last minute, and for me to take those extra loans. She was trusting me and allowing me to take the risk of Loans. If something goes wrong, as a family, we will be facing it. Even if we are in an industry for such a long time, these situations are a little above us. It was a big step for me to take, but there was trust that was present at that time."
While Suriya credited Jyotika for her support, she refused to take the compliment all upon herself. She shared that Karuppu was Suriya’s work. But they do everything together, so they were together during the time of crisis. Jyotika added that in case of parenting as well, they are on the same page. In her words:
"This was completely his work. But we do everything together; even when we are parenting, we are always on the same side of the page. We never really discuss. Here it was completely his generosity and him wanting to make the film work its way out. It was a big film."
Soon after Karuppu released in theatres, people couldn’t stop praising the film. A movie critic wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
"#Karuppu Review ( 3.25/5) Solid comeback for @Suriya_offl. A mass fantasy entertainer that blends mythology with commercial storytelling. Director #RJBalaji keeps the narrative engaging with several crowd-pleasing moments, while #Suriya’s screen presence drives the film throughout. The first half is fast and entertaining, and the second half shifts towards the main conflict and emotional beats. Though the drama could have been more intense in places, the film still delivers a satisfying theatrical experience. The finale sequence is well executed and gives the film a strong finish."
Another critic penned, "#Suriya first review on #VeeraBhadrudu #Karuppu. The film promised a unique experience: First Half: A compelling and emotional courtroom drama. Second Half: Full of 'theatrical moments,' 'mass masala,' humour, and fun. The Visuals: He credited the technicians for giving him a different look compared to his recent films." In fact, Jyotika also shared her review on Karuppu. During an interview with Sudhir Srinivasan, Jyotika said:
"The last ten minutes of the film, Suriya has really performed brilliantly. That combination is very rare to have: a performance, plus fresh storytelling, infused with heroic moments, massy scenes; that whole combo is very rare to happen where it also makes numbers and is also loved, and a performance is also taken into consideration. So it’s happened now, and we’re so overwhelmed and so happy with the love. It’s a celebration at home. He always makes sure there is a story in every film. But the box office numbers are also required."
