In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, Saba Ali Khan reacted to Saif and Amrita’s divorce. The jewellery designer shared that she felt bad for her brother, Saif Ali Khan, after his separation from Amrita. According to reports, Saif and Amrita parted ways in 2004. Saba revealed that at the time of their divorce, she was in Delhi, and the former couple was in Bombay. She shared that they were great together and that they have two beautiful children. Saba said:
"The separation takes a toll on everyone. Everyone needed that time to adjust. It was their choice. So, there’s not much that one can really comment on that."
Saba was just 15 when her brother Saif Ali Khan married Amrita in 1991. In the same interview, the jewellery designer shared that her former sister-in-law, Amrita, was like an approachable mother figure to her. However, her relationship with Amrita changed after Saif’s divorce. Saba admitted that there were times when Amrita guided her and Sharmila criticised her. She said:
"She was a motherly figure in a nicer, more approachable manner than my own mother back then, who was very strict."
Further, in the interview, Saba revealed that after Saif and Amrita’s divorce, she and her former sister-in-law eventually grew distant. The jewellery designer shared that Amrita might have wanted some distance and time to herself following the split. However, they continue to share a cordial relationship and greet each other warmly whenever they meet.
In an earlier conversation with Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi on their show Double Date, Saba and her sister, Soha Ali Khan, revealed that neither of them attended Saif and Amrita’s wedding. Back then, Soha was 13, and Saba was 15. The sister duo recalled that they learned about the marriage while they were still at school. Saba said:
"He got married when we were in school. We got a call in the principal’s office from the parents saying you won’t tell anyone anything. We don’t know how real the news is because it was in the newspapers by then. So we were told that we shouldn’t tell anyone."
Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh were once one of Bollywood’s most adored couples. They crossed paths during the filming of Bekhudi. They tied the knot in 1991 after a brief romance. In 1995, they welcomed Sara, and in 2001, they welcomed Ibrahim. However, after 13 years of marriage, the couple went their separate ways. The former couple’s divorce was far from amicable. Reports suggested that Saif wasn’t initially allowed to meet his children, Sara and Ibrahim.
The divorce reportedly took an emotional toll on Saif Ali Khan. The separation deeply affected the actor, who also had to pay a huge alimony as part of the settlement. In a 2005 interview with The Telegraph, Saif got candid about the financial strain of his divorce from Amrita. He revealed that he had agreed to pay a total of Rs. 5 crore as alimony. In addition, he was providing Rs. 1 lakh per month in child support until his son, Ibrahim, turned 18.
