Ray J's estranged wife, Princess Love, sought a protective order against him after he threatened her with a handgun on Thanksgiving 2025.
Ray J's deteriorating health has become a cause of concern for his fans. In turn, it has brought him, his work and his family dynamics into the spotlight. For those unaware, the singer and reality TV personality recently revealed in an emotional Instagram video that his heart is functioning at a dangerously low capacity and he almost 'died' recently. Amid his fragile health, his estranged wife, Princess Love, took a significant step that could reshape their co-parenting dynamic.
According to Page Six, a judge at a San Fernando courthouse gave his assent on January 30, 2026, to change a protective order that previously did not allow Ray J to meet his two children, Melody, 7, and Epik, 6. The change will now give him unlimited access to both his children and his estranged wife, Princess Love. According to the singer's attorney, the decision came after Princess Love and Ray J's mother, Sonja Norwood, testified on his behalf during the hearing.
Princess Love reportedly told the court that her children missed their father and were worried for him after his recent revelations about his health struggles. She stated that they have been asking about him. As a mother, she believes it would not be dangerous for them to spend time with Ray J. Subsequently, Ray J and Princess Love were seen leaving the courthouse together, a contrast to the legal and emotional distance between them in recent months. However, it does not mean that the duo have reconciled as a couple.
Meanwhile, in his recent social media videos, Ray J talked about Princess Love with visible emotion. He mentioned that his kids and their mom could spend all his money if anything happens to him. This message reflected his concern for his family's future and his belief that he may not have much time in life. In his words:
"My baby mama is gonna be straight, my kids are gonna be straight. If they wanna spend all the money, they can. I did my part here."
Ray J first opened up about his health condition in a video shared on January 25, 2026, wherein he revealed that he had 'almost died." A few days later, he shared another clip and claimed that his heart was functioning at only 25 per cent. Soon, he sat down for a conversation with TMZ and clarified that doctors had told him his heart was operating at 60 per cent capacity and that part of it had "turned black," describing serious cardiac complications.
Furthermore, he revealed that he had recently been hospitalised with pneumonia and heart pains, an illness he had previously battled in 2021. Ray J admitted he took multiple medications for cholesterol and a high risk of heart failure. At the same time, he expressed his gratitude to his sister, Brandy, and his parents for helping with medical bills and for accompanying him to doctor visits.
Ray J and Princess Love's relationship has long been about public ups and downs. Since 2020, the couple has filed for divorce four separate times. Princess cited their different views, lifestyles, trust issues, and life priorities as the cause of their separation in the last filing of 2024. Eventually, the bond reached a final point in November 2025 when Ray J was arrested after allegedly threatening Princess Love during a livestreamed argument. He denied pointing a gun at her, but the incident led to a protective order and misdemeanour charges, which have now changed for him.
Despite their estrangement and issues, Princess Love's decision highlights her changing views and Ray J's serious health crisis.
