Perez's family has now stated that they do not know what led to his mental breakdown inside his Miami house.
Perez Hilton tried to self-harm during a live stream at his Miami house. The 48-year-old is getting treatment and also recovering from his injuries. His family members are clueless about why the celebrity blogger tried to hurt himself.
After the horrific August 4, 2026 incident, much of the attention has been related to Perez Hilton's physical health. It was on The Perez Hilton Podcast with Chris Booker that Hilton's brother-in-law, Tom, stated that for the celebrity gossip commentator, physical recovery was of utmost importance. In his words:
"So, we are now just transitioning into the mental side of things. The actual healing, or digging into what caused this mental break as I've called it, hasn't been discovered. I don't know if it will ever be."
Perez Hilton's health complications also involve his earlier issues related to life-threatening sepsis. The family of Perez is trying to shift their focus as psychiatrists continue to check on him in the hospital.
Perez is undergoing ongoing treatment, and the central question related to his health condition is not yet answered. His family stated that there is no definitive explanation related to why Perez suddenly had a mental breakdown. The uncertainity related to his health has also speculated theories that the blogger may have got sepsis psychosis.
Earlier, Perez had these medical struggles, but Tom assured that the doctor has confirmed there is no such medical diagnosis. Perez's family is very worried about his long-term recovery and is not finding any immediate explanations for the same.
Tom had earlier shared that Perez had experienced significant blood loss and sustained additional injuries that required surgery. His treatment and recovery will be a long process. Some of Perez's physical injuries include a lot of broken bones. The brother-in-law shared:
"Although, of course, while he’s in the hospital, while he’s being treated for his physical ailments, psychiatrists come in and check in and see how he’s doing and make sure he’s not looking to harm himself. I don’t know how much he does or doesn’t recall. We will get into that more once he’s in that setting, where we’re focusing on his mental health.”
Tom also revealed that electronics are not allowed in Hilton's hospital room. He makes calls to his family through the nurse's. Perez has not seen his kids since the incident. They are not allowed to be in the area where Hilton is undergoing treatment. In his words:
"He thought he was doing what was best for the children. At that time, that’s what he thought. His kids adore him, and he’s been a present father.”
Three days after Perez self-harmed, his mom, Teresita Lavandeira, filed for temporary custody of his kids. It was a move her attorney made to protect the kids and ensure their safety. For the kids, it has been an emotional roller coaster ride.
Tom mentioned that Perez's relatives and close friends are offering a lot of support. According to reports, Tom's kids, sister and niece fled from the house shortly after Perez's livestream started. Perez's mom has temporary custody of the kids as of August 18, 2026. Hilton needs to get psychiatric clearance before he gets the right to visit his kids.
