'I Would Break Down', Nirms Purja's Wife Suchi On 'Worrying' About Him Before He Died In Avalanche

Nims Purja's wife, Suchi Purja opened up on questions regarding "worrying" about her late husband's dangerous mountaineering expeditions.

Nirmal 'Nims' Purja's tragic demise has left the mountaineering world shocked and sparked widespread reaction. He passed away after facing a devastating avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan. The tragic incident occurred around midday on July 30, 2026, when the 43-year-old and his team were hit by a massive slide at an altitude of approximately 6,600 to 7,000 meters. The incident brought to focus how risky Nims' job was. 

Notably, Nims Purja's wife, Suchi Purja, also once opened up about "worrying" about her late husband's work. The mountaineer's sudden passing made his fans revisit Suchi's past comment.

Was Suchi Purja worried about Nims Purja's work?

Suchi Purja and Nims Purja were the type of couple people look up to. She was very supportive of her husband's thrilling yet dangerous mountaineering ventures, and he never shied away from crediting her for it. Nims' better half came under the spotlight after appearing in Netflix's 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible alongside him. The documentary follows Nims Purja's historic mission to climb all 14 mountains above 8,000 meters in a record time of seven months.

In the doc film, Suchi Purja shared that she was often asked by her friends and acquaintances about her mental state when her husband was out on his mountaineering expeditions. Suchi revealed that she prepared her heart and mind for Nims Purja's challenging career and always told others the same. The strong-willed woman shared that she understood how much mountaineering meant to Nims, and she would never deviate him from his goal.

Suchi always encouraged her husband in chasing his dreams, and even though she thought it was risky, she revealed that she didn't constantly worry about him. Sharing that reason, Nims' wife stated that he would often go on such dangerous expeditions, and if she kept stressing about it, it would do neither her nor her husband any good. Praising how Nims Purja knew exactly what he wanted from life, Suchi stated:

"My friends ask, 'How do you do all of this?' My answer is always, 'If I am constantly worrying about him, then it's not going to do any good to me. I would break down. You have to be strong.' I've never wanted to deviate him from his dream or his goals. He knew what he wanted to do in life."

When Nims was awarded an honorary doctorate, he dedicated the accolade to his wife. He asked Suchi, who was seated in the audience, to stand up so that everybody in the room gets to see the one whose support led him to the achievement. Addressing Suchi as "my love", Nims shared that her silent backing and sacrifices are what led him to achieve his dreams. He shared the challenges of working in the busy unit, SBS and thanked his wife for never complaining about his lifestyle.

Nims Purja praised her resilience and the sacrifices she made managing the family on her own. The mountaineer was glad that she understood that he wouldn't be around 24/7. Saying "thank you sweetheart" for her contribution in his life, he mentioned:

"I would also like to dedicate this honour to my beautiful wife, Suchi...Ladies and gentlemen you know I serve in the most busiest unit in the world, SBS and the best. We call it water missing cycle. She was with me there and from there to now I spent 11 months away from the family on the big mountains. I run nine different companies and I'm still breaking the world records. Without Suchi I wouldn't be who I am today."
