"Broad Peak, I ask for nothing but safe passage up and back down. I take zero mountains for granted. Not one. The moment my foot leaves basecamp, it’s 100%. Always has been. Always will be. This one is dedicated to everyone who carried me here. Supporters. Critics. All of you. Without both sides, there is no fire. So thank you genuinely. My purpose has never been about me. It’s about what I represent. It’s about showing YOU that your own mountains—whatever they are—are climbable."

Nirmal 'Nims' Purja grew up in a family that has a long history in military service. Nirmal's father and his elder brothers served in the Brigade of Gurkhas, soldiers from Nepal. Since his family members had extensive careers in the military services, it also led Nirmal to attend an English boarding school. Nirmal further decided to join the Gurkhas in 2003. Purja was in a special unit, and eventually he developed a deep love for mountaineering and specialised in cold weather warfare. During a break in 2012, he learned how to climb the 6,119-meter Lobuche East. It led to his first summit in 2014. And the rest was history. In 2016, he carried out a solo rescue and saved a climber. While he has been extremely passionate about mountaineering, he has always found his way back home. His mom supported him at every step of his life. Reportedly, his brother, Kamal, didn't want Nirmal to give up his military career and was against his choice to become a mountaineer. This caused a rift between the two brothers, and they reportedly didn't talk for months. However, they allegedly repaired their broken bond when their mom's health worsened, and it was then that Kamal and other family members supported Nims Purja's dreams and backed him.
