According to reports, the avalanche hit somewhere between Camp 2 and Camp 3, leading to 10 deaths, including the well-known mountaineer. Amid that, an old interview by Purja has surfaced online, where he spoke about serving in the British army and later leaving his financially promising position to pursue mountaineering.
Amid Nirmal Purja's passing, a 2024 interview has resurfaced that recounts the mountaineer's decision to leave his stable job for an uncertain and risky path. According to reports, Nirmal appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience and spoke at length about his decision to quit the British military. He was quoted as saying:
"So, Joe, you asked me two questions. Let me break it down. So, in 2019, at this point, I served with the UK Special Forces for 10 years. I've been around the world. I have obviously done some crazy sh*t, you know, that you know, people wouldn't have probably seen in the movies and all that."
He recalled that he was only six years away from getting a full pension when the idea of covering 14 peaks came to him. He admitted that while staying in the military would have been better for him financially, he couldn't ignore the mission once it had come to his mind. Nirmal Purja further shared that he served in the military for 16 years before calling it quits. He was quoted as saying:
"What happened in 2019 was I [Nirmal Purja] found the purpose. And uh look, just to just to even put things into perspective at this point, I had served 16 years in the British military. I had only 6 years left to get the full pension. So, you know, if you look from the financial perspective, you know, I'm really there to get the full pension. But then I got this idea like the 14 Peaks. So, why am I doing this?"
Nirmal Purja became one of the most-famous mountaineers in history. However, when he started the journey, he had no idea how far he would make it. While Purja was determined, his brother was not happy with his decision and didn't even talk to him for months. His wife, Suchi Purja, became his main source of strength through the journey.
Nirmal Purja revealed that he began the journey with two purposes in mind. He shared that the first was to prove that "nothing is impossible". He said, "doesn't matter where you come from, what your background is, whatever that is, you can literally show the world nothing is impossible." And the second reason for him was to give his Nepalese climbing community a face. He said:
"No excuses. And the second one was, look, the Nepalese climbing community, the Sherpas are the kings of 8,000ers, but we never had the right, you know, like credit. And I wanted to raise the name of the Nepalese climbers. And those two purposes gave me the strength. So, what happened after that was straight away I went to the HR. I put in my resignation. It was again literally to show the world that nothing is impossible. There are no excuses."
While initially most people believed that he wouldn't be able to cover the World's 14 Highest Peaks in just 7 months, Nirmal Purja proved them wrong. Despite setbacks and financial challenges, on October 29, 2019, Nirmal completed summiting the world's 14 highest peaks in just six months and six days. His journey was later captured in the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.
