Netflix's Turkish psychological thriller, Not A Stranger, is one of the most nerve-wracking series on the platform in recent months. Initially, the show opens with the story of a struggling mother, but it slowly turns into a chilling tale. There is obsession, manipulation and unexpected betrayals. The show's final episode answers most of the mysteries, but it also leaves the door open for a possible sequel.
Not A Stranger is based on the story of 'Funda'. She is a successful painter whose life changes after becoming a mother. She is tired by the responsibilities of raising her daughter, 'Mavi'. It also makes her feel distant from her career and husband, 'Ilker'. So, to regain some balance in her life, she decides to hire a nanny named 'Nazli'. Initially, the nanny appears to be perfect to 'Funda'.
'Nazli' quickly bonds with the baby and becomes an essential support system to her. However, things change as the story proceeds. 'Funda' begins to notice some strange incidents around her and starts to question her mental sanity. Soon, her health declines, and her family develops concerns over her. It leaves viewers confused till the end whether 'Funda' has suffered a mental breakdown or if someone is trying to manipulate her.
The biggest shock comes in the finale, where it is revealed that 'Nazli' had carefully planned her entry into 'Funda' and 'Ilker's' life. Instead of being an innocent nanny, she developed an unhealthy obsession with the family. According to her belief, she is 'Mavi's' rightful mother and the lady of the house.
Eventually, the truth behind 'Funda's' declining health is also exposed. While 'Funda' believes she is losing control of her mental state, 'Nazli' has been secretly spiking her drinks. The tampering caused 'Funda' to have symptoms that resemble psychological distress. Alongside, she gaslights her into questioning her reality.
Meanwhile, 'Nazli's' boyfriend, 'Emre,' finds out a secret connection between her and 'Ilker'. Although he had already told 'Funda' that he had a one-night stand with 'Nazli' in the past, he did not reveal that it was a four-month relationship.
Although it was a casual relationship for him, she took things seriously. 'Emre' tries to expose it, but dies during a chase involving 'Ilker', which leaves several unanswered questions. Eventually, 'Nazli' partially succeeds in getting 'Funda' removed from the household. The latter enters a treatment facility thinking she needs help, while 'Nazli' stays close to 'Ilker' and 'Mavi'.
Initially, it seems 'Nazli' got what she wanted. However, in the final moments, things take a sharp turn. ''Funda's' condition improves while being away from her home. Later, 'Kemal,' who used to have romantic feelings for 'Funda,' finds out the truth about 'Nazli.' He also knows that she had a pregnancy and a miscarriage in the past, but it is not revealed whether 'Ilker' was the father. Still, she believes she deserves him, 'Mavi,' and the affluent lifestyle.
But before he could bring the truth out, she weaponizes 'Kemal's’ feelings against 'Funda,' and he remains quiet. Still, he goes to pick her up from the mental facility after her treatment ends.
The last scene in the series shows a contrasting visual where 'Nazli', 'Mavi', and 'Ilker' behave like a perfect family in the house. Meanwhile, 'Funda' stands outside. But her expressions doesn't reflect defeat. Rather, she seems determined and angry. The same expressions could make way for Season 2's plot.
Netflix has not announced a second season of the show. But the ending has left space for more storylines. It could focus on 'Funda's' efforts to reclaim her family and expose 'Nazli's’ manipulation. In fact, 'Kemal's’ investigation could also play a major role in it. In fact, it might also explore 'Ilker's' past and his lies.
