She shared that in 2017, she got married to a Muslim man, Aatif Tase, who was a businessman, out of love, and he asked her to convert to get married. Surve further added that she had to convert to get married to her, as it was a required process in their religion. From her birth name 'Sayali', it was changed to 'Ateeja'. However, after she started living with him, she realised the kind of background he belongs to and the habits he has. She was quoted as saying:

"Mujhe conversion karna pada, kyunki nikah karna zaruri tha aur convert hona bhi zaruri tha. Pehle procedure hui, uske baad main wahin rehti gayi. Jab aap 24 ghante ek insaan ke saath rehte ho, toh aapko uski aadatein samajh aati hain aur uske background ka bhi andaaza hota hai."

Sayali revealed that over the years, her marriage left her in extreme pain. She would constantly get verbally abused, and there was a lot of physical violence. She stated that she would hear abuses 24 hours a day, and without any mistake, he would beat her; it had become normal. She said:

"Jab aapko 24 ghante gaaliyon ke alawa kuch sunne ko nahi milta, aur bina kisi galti ke maar-peet hoti hai, toh jo cheezein aapke liye pehle normal nahi hoti, woh dheere-dheere normalise ho jaati hain."

"Definitely love jihad ka mamla hai. Kai log mana karte hain aur bolte hain ki jab maine khud yeh kiya tha, toh aaj kya bolna. Jab maine yeh decision liya tha, tab itni samajh nahi thi. Main bharose mein, unhe ek achha insaan samajh kar gayi thi. Yeh saari cheezein iss dharm mein zaroor hoti hain."

After ending the marriage, Surve converted back to Hinduism, and she has also changed her children's names along with her. She wants them to feel a sense of belonging to her religion. She also claimed that she never liked talking badly about any religion and even tried to adjust, but it was all in vain. She was asked to follow their practices, which she was unfamiliar with. Not only this was also asked to learn to offer namaz.

Sayali stated that she had filed FIRs against her husband, but she is concerned about the safety of her children. It is the reason she doesn't want to travel to Mumbai, and officials have assured her that they will come to Pune. She even got emotional talking about the ordeal she faced and stated that she has proof of the same.
