With Katey Sagal joining the cast of Netflix's 'One Piece' Season 2, let's learn all about her husband, Kurt Sutter and their decades-long relationship.
Katey Sagal is one of the most renowned American actresses, songwriters and singers. Her career in the entertainment industry began way back in 1973 when she started working as a backing vocalist for a number of well-known singers of the time, including Bob Dylan, Tanya Tucker and Etta James. It was on April 19, 1994, that Katey finally dropped her first solo album, Well.... She soon followed this with her second album, Room, released on June 1, 2004.
Coming to her acting career, Katey Sagal found the most success when she was cast in the sitcom, Married…with Children, which ran for 11 years from 1987 to 1997. Many might not be aware, but Katey has also worked as a voice actor, most notably as ‘Leela’ in the science-fiction animated comedy, Futurama. Over the years, Katey Sagal has established herself in Hollywood. Fans of Katey might be happy to know that she is all set to appear on the series, One Piece Season 2, as ‘Dr. Kureha.’ Now, with the spotlight on her as One Piece Season 2 premieres on March 9, 2026, let's take a look at her personal life, especially who her husband, Kurt Sutter, is and their relationship.
According to reports, Kurt Sutter was born in Rahway, New Jersey. Here, he was apparently “raised in the shadow of Rahway prison,” as mentioned in his bio on the Television Academy's website. In the same bio, it is further revealed that Kurt Sutter spent most of his childhood indoors. He could usually be found three feet from a TV screen and away from people. This is when “he learned the essentials of storytelling and the comic significance of anvils.”
Many might not be aware, but just like his wife, Katey Sagal, Kurt Sutter too belongs to the entertainment industry. A quick look at his Instagram bio reveals that he is a "storyteller." Professionally, Kurt works as a screenwriter and producer. Reports online suggest that his first writing gig was on FX's The Shield. Soon after, he created another FX drama series, Sons of Anarchy, in 2008, in addition to The Bastard Executioner.
Kurt Sutter has also worked on the script of the Jake Gyllenhaal and Forest Whitaker starrer, Southpaw, which was released in 2015. In the same year, during a conversation with New Jersey Monthly, Kurt confessed that writing had always been his go-to form of expression.
Katey Sagal had previously shared that she and her now-husband, Kurt Sutter, were introduced by a mutual friend. Giving fans insight into how they met, Kurt shared on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast in 2024 that he and Katey first crossed paths at a 12-step program. Kurt admitted that he did not have the courage to ask her out at the time. The reason behind this was that he was still a struggling artist who had yet to land his first gig. And Katy, on the other hand, was already a well-known name in the industry. Kurt said, "Not going to f***ing ask her out without a job. So I waited, and then I got a gig."
It was only after he landed his job on The Shield that he felt like it was the right time to ask Katey out. Katey recalled to E! News that Kurt did this by asking if she would like to have coffee with him sometime. Although she said yes to him at the time, Katey Sagal, who is a mom of two, went “out of touch” because she was focused on her children. The couple only managed to go on their coffee date months later, after Kurt called her up and asked her out once again, and since then, they “kind of never left each other after that.”
Kurt Sutter and Katey Sagal chose to hold a private, intimate wedding ceremony at their Las Feliz home on October 2, 2004. While the couple did inform their neighbours beforehand about the party, Kurt and Katey's “house wedding” still ended up being shut down by the police. Apparently, this was because they were “too loud” and were “dancing too loudly”, as Katey explained during a 2024 appearance on the Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast.
It was on January 10, 2007, that Kurt and Katey Sagal welcomed their daughter, Esmé Louise, via surrogate. During an interview with People, Katie explained that she and her husband had gone through the entire in vitro fertilisation process to welcome their “beautiful miracle.” Calling Kurt a “very loving man,” Katey further revealed that Kurt had taken to fatherhood like a champ and that he was right there when their daughter was born. It is worth mentioning that apart from his own daughter, Kurt Sutter is also a stepfather to Katie's children from her previous marriage – Sarah Grace and Jackson.
Being the creator of Sons of Anarchy, Kurt wrote the role of ‘Gemma Teller' on the show specifically for his wife, Katie. Well, Katie has often mentioned how grateful she is that Kurt wrote the role for her. Furthermore, during an appearance on Literally! With Rob Lowe, she told host, Rob Lowe that although Kurt had originally written it as a small role, the network decided to make it bigger.
For the unversed, Katie and Kurt launched their very own podcast, PIE, just a few years ago, in 2024. The reason that they decided to start it was that “there are a lot of people that we don't know that we are curious about.” Katie mentioned the same on the Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast. Noting how her husband, Kurt, “particularly never likes to leave the house,” she thought, “let's have a podcast where we meet people that we would like to know.”
