Still, it did not prevent social media users from calling out her approach.
Martha Stewart had shared a now-deleted Instagram post where she was seen in worn-out and tattered clothes. She had also dirt smeared across her face. The entrepreneur also held a clipboard with a handwritten sign, which read, "I am hungry; help me!" In fact, the Instagram carousel was a part of her Halloween-themed QVC candles. Martha accompanied the post writing:
"My QVC candles are perfect for Halloween!!!"
However, her costume quickly became a center of attention. Although Martha removed the photos shortly after posting due to backlash, many internet users had already taken screenshots. So, it went viral in no time. Later, when those pictures resurfaced on Reddit, many users called it "out of touch," "offensive," and "gross." Some users also argued that dressing up as someone struggling with hunger is a serious issue.
The criticism was more noticeable because Martha is one of America's wealthiest lifestyle personalities. She has an estimated fortune of USD 400 million. So, critics questioned her decision to use poverty as a Halloween costume, especially in a promotional post. Multiple news outlets tried to contact Martha's team for comments, but they did not get any immediate response.
For those who don't know, Martha Stewart built her business empire through cooking, home decoration, gardening, and TV appearances. She was born into a working-class family and learned several household skills from her parents. After completing her studies, she became a stockbroker on Wall Street and eventually began a catering business.
The business mogul's first book, Entertaining, was published in 1982. Later, Martha expanded her business into TV, magazines, books, and product lines. She established Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia for the same purpose: to work with major retailers.
She faced a career slump in 2004 after she was found guilty of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and making false statements linked to a stock sale investigation. After serving five months in federal prison, she was in home confinement. Following her release, she rebuilt her image.
Martha Stewart met her former husband, Andrew "Andy" Stewart, on a blind date before they married in 1961. She was just 19 at the time, and they welcomed their daughter, Alexis, after four years in 1965. They stayed married for three decades before calling it quits in 1987.
Later, in her 2024 Netflix documentary, Martha, she spoke about the challenges in her marriage. She admitted that there were extramarital affairs from both sides. The 85-year-old found that Andrew was allegedly having an affair with a woman who worked on their property.
Martha also shared a complex bond with her daughter. Alexis published her book Whateverland in 2011, where she revealed that she had a strict upbringing. However, she grew close to her mother during her time in prison.
