The film stars Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu fame Soori in the lead role. Alongside Soori, the Tamil film also features Suhas Pagolu and Mahima Nambiar. Mandaadi has already created buzz on social media due to its gripping storyline and strong performances. According to director and writer Mathimaran Pugazhendhi, Mandaadi offers a never-seen-before experience for the audience.
Mandaadi is set in a coastal village in South Tamil Nadu. The story focuses on the people who live near the sea, and one of the most prominent things is the traditional boat race culture. 'Sattapuli' (played by Suhas) is a powerful man and owns a boat business at Kalingapatnam port. Besides running the boat business, 'Sattapuli' also leads a successful boat-racing team called Tsunami Riders.
'Sattapuli's' old friend, 'Muthukaali' (played by Soori), has been away from the village for nearly two decades. However, he returns when a young boy gets caught in a feud involving 'Sattapuli's' family. His return to the village brings back the old issues and bitterness between him and 'Sattapuli'. The two were best friends, but eventually it has turned into a serious rivalry, and now, after years, they are all set to compete against each other in a traditional boat race.
The film also explores the complicated relationship between 'Muthukaali' and 'Angel' (played by Mahima Nambiar) and the role of their coach, 'Munayya' (played by Sathyaraj). In an interview, director and writer Mathimaran Pugazhendhi shared that the film is not only about the traditional boat race culture, but also about the people, their relationships and their emotions. The movie beautifully explores themes including second chances and redemption.
One of the major things that works for Mandaadi is its boat racing sequences. The production team has put a lot of effort into doing the action scenes. Although VFX and green-screen techniques have been used, the film's use of real locations and practical execution makes it even more promising. The climax boat race is particularly the best of all.
The narrative of Mandaadi gains momentum after the interval. It explores the past of 'Muthukaali' and 'Sattapuli'. From their friendship to their fallout, everything has been explained in detail in the second half. In fact, Sathyaraj’s entry as 'Munayya' adds emotional depth to the story. However, it is 'Muthukaali' and 'Sattapuli's' chemistry that stole the spotlight.
Soori’s performance as 'Muthukaali' is praiseworthy. Particularly, the scenes that were filmed at the sea need special mention. Director and writer Mathimaran Pugazhendhi shared similar thoughts regarding Soori. In an interview, the director praised Soori for his dedication. He said:
"Soori sir completely surrendered himself to the world of the film. He trained physically, understood the community and approached the character not as someone playing a fisherman, but as a person who actually belongs to that world."
The cinematography by SR Kathir is another major highlight of the Tamil sports action drama film. The thing where Mandaadi falls short is its screenplay. The basic idea of two former friends, now rivals, seems familiar and repetitive. The film does not provide enough emotional depth required in 'Muthukaali' and 'Sattapuli's' conflict. The first half seems a bit stretched. In fact, the romantic scenes involving Soori and Mahima look a bit formulaic.
Overall, the movie deserves applause for trying something visually different with the boat-racing theme. And if you are a fan of Soori and Suhas, this is one of the best films to watch. We can suggest that the film is worth watching if you are looking for a visually pleasing sports action drama.
