On May 20, 2026, People obtained an undated call between the subject of Netflix's The Crash, Mackenzie Shirilla, and her mother, Natalie Shirilla. In the call, she discusses the realities of life behind bars in the Cuyahoga County Jail, where she has been since her double-murder conviction. Mackenzie can be heard saying that she “doesn't want to live here with these people,” referring to being surrounded by "murderers [and] kidnappers,” as her mother described them. Natalie then went on to say, “But anyway, since you have to spend time there, we all knew you were going to anyway, it doesn't sound so, so bad.”

More about Mackenzie Shirilla and her murder case

According to reports, Mackenzie Shirilla was driving her boyfriend, Dom, and his friend, Davion, home from a friend's house and ended up crashing the car into a brick building early in the morning. Reports suggest that she was driving 100 miles per hour, and the crash took the lives of both Dom and Davion, although she herself survived. It is worth noting that Mackenzie and her family have always maintained that she had suffered a mental episode and that the crash was truly an accident. According to reports, her first parole hearing will take place in September 2037, nearly 14 years after she was given a 15-to-life sentence on August 31, 2023. Currently, Mackenzie is 21 years old. In Netflix's The Crash, viewers get to see Mackenzie's first-ever interview from prison. To mention, the interview was held in the presence of her lawyer, who remained off-camera. When she was asked why she agreed to do the interview, Mackenzie said:

“I’ve never spoke before, and I’ve never told my side of the story. I understand there’s many different sides to the story and different perspectives, but I just wanna say my truth. I just know myself, and I know I’m not a monster.”
