Luigi Mangione is the man who has been accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson. It was in December 2024 that Brian was reportedly gunned down by Luigi outside a Manhattan hotel. Now, Luigi's lawyers have asserted on planning a psychiatric defense at his murder trial. This is because Luigi has claimed of suffering from extreme emotional disturbance when he had gunned UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
A judge reportedly noted that Luigi Mangione could spend less time in prison if he is able to prove psychiatric defense in his case. Well, a jury that will accept such a defence will be obligated to convict Luigi of manslaughter instead of murder. If Luigi is convicted of manslaughter then he has to spend 25 years in prison and if is convicted of murder then he has to spend rest of his life in prison. Well, a psychiatric defense means that the alleged person has admitted to killing but has certain psychiatric issues. This is different from a defense of insanity which if proven can make Luigi take psychiatric help.
Well, the latest development in the case came after a secret hearing reportedly held in June 2026. The reasons for the sealing was to give the defense an opportunity to determine whether they were going forth with that defense and the nature of that defense. For the unversed, sealing of a case means certain court documents are not accessible to the public for confidentiality purposes. Luigi Mangione's lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, had argued that the unsealing of the case would harm Luigi Mangione. In his words:
"The reason why we asked for the sealing is that this defense is not available federally and Mr. Mangione is being prosecuted federally and this is prejudicial to his defense to the exact same facts."
According to social media reports, Luigi Mangione's state trial will proceed on September 8, 2026. Well, the federal trial will move ahead on October 13, 2026. He is reportedly facing a life sentence in both cases. However, Luigi has pleaded not guilty in both cases related to the 2024 murder. Recently in prison, Luigi had turned 28 years old and reportedly had received a donation of USD 28,000 for his legal fees. Well New York Judge Gregory Carro had stated the decision of the defense two weeks post a secret hearing was done on the matter. A transcript will be unsealed along with other records after some time. New York Judge Gregory Carro noted that Mangione's lawyers had raised the possibility of a psychiatric defense in 2026. In his words:
"The reasons for the sealing was to give the defense an opportunity to determine whether they were going forth with that defense and the nature of that defense."
Luigi Mangione's trial reportedly will not be delayed, and the next hearing, according to social media reports, will be on August 11, 2026. It was Assistant District Attorney Joel Seidemann who had said that Luigi had to be evaluated by a prosecution psychiatrist. Speaking on the trials, Luigi said, "It’s the same trial twice. One plus one is two. Double jeopardy by any commonsense definition.”
