Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleJohn Goodman has recently sparked online chatter after debuting a gaunt physique that made him seem almost unrecognizable. The 74-year-old actor's new look resulted from shedding 200 pounds. His shocking transformation at first led many to wonder if he's resorted to Ozempic. However, he clarified that he underwent an operation to reduce body fat. Recently, he shared that his changed physique made him turn down a nude scene.
John Goodman recently opened up about how his massive weight loss through surgery made him image conscious. On the November 2, 2026 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, John stated that after his physical transformation, he was offered to do a nude scene for the HBO sitcom The Righteous Gemstones, which ran for four seasons from 2019 to 2025. He shared that he turned down the scene because he was not confident about his body.
John mentioned that his body was 'messed up' after a 200-pound transformation and he wasn't sure how it would look on camera. He added that he and the crew eventually found a way to make it work and "got it done." In his words:
"I thought I was going to have to be naked in it and I said, 'I don't know. My body's too messed up losing all this weight.'"
John Goodman stated that at times looking at his own face feels like looking at a stranger. The 74-year-old Roseanne star had a different, pre-weight-loss image of himself in his mind and would suddenly feel 'weird' seeing himself, as he still isn't used to his transformed look. He added that even though it was a 'strange' experience, it was still 'fun' for him. The actor stated:
"I'm still trying to get used to my face," he continued. "It's weird. I think of myself as one way and then I look at myself, 'Oh, wow!' It's strange. It's fun to get used to. There's a lot of stuff I'm getting used to."
Looking back at his lifestyle pre-transformation, John Goodman believes it may have impacted his career negatively, he said, "I was working enough as I was. I wasn't crazy about it, but I wonder if I probably sabotaged myself."
John Goodman told The New Yorker in an October 2026 interview that he began his weight-loss journey before getting sober in 2007, at age 55. The Digger star shared that he was 'eating alcoholically' after going sober in 2007, leading him to weigh 'almost 400 pounds' at his heaviest. John revealed that he tried normal weight-loss methods like dieting, which helped temporarily.
John would bound back to his previous self after a short while. "I'd lose 60 pounds in a summer, gain it all back. 70 pounds, 80 pounds. And that got tiring," he said. That was when he decided to undergo stomach surgery and eventually lost half his body weight. However, the surgery had some lasting side effects on his body. He revealed, "I also turned anemic and lost a layer of fat under my skin, and I'm cold all the time."
John Goodman's current goal is to build up his core strength and take care of his body. He stated, "Basically, building up the core, balance, strength training, stuff like that, so I don't fall - which I did as soon as I got back to London from Christmas break. I came down parallel to the ground, on my hip, and fractured it."
