The veteran announcer, who had hosted the iconic game show since 2011, was suddenly dropped by Sony Pictures Television. However, the parties were already in the news after an internal investigation into some allegations about him surfaced online. However, it is still unclear which information from their investigation led the makers to this tough call.
The whole controversy began with an incident on an American Airlines flight in May 2026. Some credible news reports alleged that Jim's fellow passengers made claims during the flight, and crew members had to notify authorities. Eventually, when the flight landed at Los Angeles International Airport, the law enforcement officers met the Airline staff and briefly questioned Jim Thornton.
Later, American Airlines confirmed the incident and revealed that they had requested that authorities arrive at the airport after Jim's fellow passenger filed a complaint. However, initially, neither the airline nor the law enforcement authorities revealed Jim Thornton's identity or the exact content of the complaint. Later, it was revealed that the passenger allegedly saw him inside an online support group forum called lifeline.chat, which is a chat room for people with pedophilic thoughts.
In fact, this incident largely stayed out of the news until recent reports about Jim and photos of his chat taken by the fellow passenger brought it back to the fore, forcing Sony to investigate the matter. They announced on September 1, 2026, that Jim was suspended for the time being while they were conducting a detailed investigation into the allegations against him. Again, the studio did not publicly share the allegations against him, yet confirmed it was reviewing everything.
To fill the gap, the makers also reportedly began making contingency plans for the upcoming episodes of Wheel of Fortune to prevent uncertainty for the audience. Now, after three days, Sony confirmed that they had completed the investigation and Jim's employment had been terminated.
Meanwhile, Jim has strongly denied the allegations and maintained that he did not engage in any illegal conduct. In fact, he was never arrested or charged with a crime. His legal team also confirmed that law enforcement spoke with him for a few minutes after the flight's landing and then released him after finding nothing.
Explaining Jim's mindset, his attorney, Allison Hart, explained that he had become a suicide prevention advocate after losing a close family member to suicide in recent years. So, he accidentally clicked the link to the controversial chatroom by mistake while he was trying to see a crisis chat room to help people with suicidal thoughts. To date, no criminal charges have been filed, and there has been no public announcement that anyone is investigating the matter.
For those who don't know, Jim Thornton took the position as Wheel of Fortune's host in 2011 after legendary announcer, Charlie O'Donnell. Since then, Jim has become an essential part of the show. Earlier, he was also a part of The Price Is Right, The Soup, and many animation and film projects.
Since the show's Season 44, which is scheduled to air soon, the makers are reportedly making quick moves to ensure the incident does not affect the broadcast. The episodes already filmed with his voice will be re-recorded and edited with an interim announcer. They are following the same process for other related franchises. For now, Sony has not named a permanent replacement, although they have begun the search, and Jim's future remains uncertain.
