Jennifer Lawrence has been at the centre of several controversies related to her love life throughout her career, until her marriage to art gallery director Cooke Maroney. When Jennifer was filming her 2017 psychological horror movie, Mother!, she was more interested in the director than the project. Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, who is 21 years older than Jennifer, caught her attention right from the beginning of the shoot.
While working together, Jennifer and Darren fell in love and started dating. After Mother!'s release, she appeared on Andy Cohen's show Watch What Happens Live to discuss both the movie and her budding relationship with its director. The host asked her how much she understood the movie "on a scale of one to totally confused." The actress had a shocking reply to that.
Jennifer Lawrence humorously told Andy that she was busy sleeping with Darren Aronofsky and didn't focus too much on the project. She rated her understanding of the plot at four to five and added that she had important stuff about the movie written in her notes. Jennifer then made a suggestive comment, saying that if anyone wants to understand the films in depth, they know what to do. In her words:
"I'm going to be honest. Well, I was sleeping with the director, so I had CliffsNotes. So…five? Or a four. But if anybody needs any tips on understanding their films, you know what to do."
Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky's relationship fell apart as quickly as it began. They were fundamentally different people, and their significant age gap only widened those differences until they eventually broke up. Regarding their differences, Jennifer told Vogue that she particularly wasn't fond of Darren's Harvard graduate side.
"I normally don't like Harvard people, because they can't go two minutes without mentioning that they went to Harvard," the actress stated. As for Jennifer and Darren's other differences, he found her taste in reality TV to be "so vastly disappointing." It likely stemmed from their generational gap.
Jennifer said that during breaks from filming the dark movie Mother!, she used to head to her 'Kardashian tent,' where she could relax while watching her favourite show, which Darren found bizarre. The final nail in the coffin for their relationship was the very movie that brought them together. During an interview for Variety's Actors on Actors series, the Oscar-winning actress shared:
"Normally, I promote a movie, ask people to go see it, and then it's just out of your hands. I normally just kind of let it go [but] dating the director was different."
Jennifer didn't think much about her projects after release, and audience response was the last thing she wanted to discuss with others. However, Darren was exactly the opposite of her in this case. He wanted to talk about the box-office performance of Mother! eveytime they conversed, and it left Jennifer frustrated.
Later, after Jennifer and Darren parted ways, a source close to them told PEOPLE that their relationship was "not healthy" and on top of that, Mother!'s bad reviews reportedly put the actress in a terrible headspace. The insider added that "they were never destined for marriage."
