What happened to Jason Collins?

Former NBA player Jason Collins sat down for a conversation with ESPN's Ramona Shelburne and revealed that he is battling Stage 4 glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Doctors have made it clear that they cannot remove the tumour safely through surgery, leaving his treatment in uncertainty. The 47-year-old's heartbreaking confession received widespread support from his former teammates.

Jason explained that he first began experiencing the symptoms in early 2025, but tried to deal with them himself. However, by August 2025, he could feel his condition worsening to a point where he could not focus or complete simple tasks, prompting him to seek medical advice. Soon, a CT scan confirmed the heartbreaking diagnosis. Yet, his family did not reveal the specifics of the situation to the world. In his words:

"My family put out a vague statement because I was mentally unable to speak for myself.c

The football star has revealed that doctors hold the view that a tumor-removal surgery can affect him in multiple negative ways. Jason explained that the shape and placement of the tumor have made it dangerous to conduct surgery. Consequently, he is taking the standard cancer treatment of radiation. Amid this, he has been given an average prognosis of 11 to 14 months, something Jason has accepted with time. However, instead of relying solely on these methods, he has also expressed his openness to pursuing innovative, cutting-edge treatments to save other lives. Sharing his views, Jason said:

"If that's all the time I have left, I'd rather spend it trying a course of treatment that might one day be a new standard of care for everyone."

Who is Jason Collins' husband, Brunson Green?

Jason Collins is going through one of the toughest battles of his life, and during this difficult phase, he has received the significant support of his husband, Brunson Green, whom he married in May 2025 in Austin, Texas. They have been together since 2024 and got engaged during the Los Angeles Lakers Pride Night celebration. Jason has often credited Brunson for being a steady presence through every major milestone in his post-NBA life.

Brunson Green, 57, was born to a respected film producer and the president of Harbinger Pictures, based in Los Angeles. He earned widespread recognition after producing the acclaimed 2011 film, The Help, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Brunson grew up in Mississippi and began his career collaborating with longtime friend and filmmaker, Tate Taylor. Some of his popular projects include United Kingdom, Walking Out, and Pretty Ugly People, among others. On the other hand, Jason played 13 seasons of NBA and later retired after the 2013-2014 season.
