What were James Ransone's personal struggles before his death at 46?

Throughout his life, James Ransone was open about several profound personal struggles, starting from facing s*xual assault as a child to substance abuse and mental health issues. In 2021, Ransone publicly disclosed that he had been repeatedly sexually abused in 1992 at age 12 at his family's home in Phoenix, Maryland, by a former math tutor. He made the revelation in a lengthy Instagram post addressed directly to his alleged abuser, named Timothy Rualo. Recalling the abuse, Ransone wrote:

"We did very little math. The strongest memory I have of the abuse was washing blood and feces out of my sheets after you left. I remember doing this as a  12-year-old because I was too ashamed to tell anyone."

James Ransone reported his alleged assault to the Baltimore County police in 2020, but prosecutors declined to pursue charges, which he noted contributed to a "lifetime of shame and embarrassment."  The It Chapter Two actor couldn't really move on from this, and looking at his child reminded him of his dark past, which affected his parenting. Shortly before his death, Ransone wrote on his website that fatherhood had "cracked [him] wide open," forcing him to confront deep-seated shame he had long avoided in his attempt to be a role model for his children. Ransone also battled severe addiction to alcohol and h***in.

James Ransone once shared that by age 27, his addiction had left him USD 30,000 in debt. He eventually achieved sobriety in 2006, shortly before filming Generation Kill. Ransone often discussed how his early trauma shaped his mental health in adulthood. He spoke of struggling with the "catharsis of acting," noting that portraying layered, often unlikable characters made him "not always feel good" in his own skin. All those tragic events might have eventually contributed to his untimely death. During a 2016 profile with Interview Magazine, recalling an overwhelming shooting experience, Ransone stated:

"I remember going to Africa and I was going to be there for almost a year. I was number two on the call sheet and I was like, 'I think somebody made a mistake. This is too much responsibility for me.'"
