He was a 20-year-old student from the University of Alabama who went missing during a trip while speaking, raising serious concerns about his safety. He was eventually found near Somorrostro Beach, close to the Shôko nightclub where James paid a brief visit before going missing. According to the local police, there is no hint of foul play in James Gracey's death. Authorities shared that they have begun investigating possible angles and evidence points to understand what might have led to the 20-year-old's death. But until now, their investigation suggests it was an accident, not a criminal act. Investigators believe that James may have fallen into the sea near a rock breakwater area close to the nightclub. Subsequently, his body was found not far from the shoreline.
The location suggested he had accidentally entered the water and was unable to get out. Although the official cause of death is still pending, the autopsy and toxicology reports early assessments suggest that drowning is a probable reason. Meanwhile, the police have emphasised that their further medical findings would offer a clear understanding of the cause behind his death.
Several details uncovered during the investigation have helped authorities piece together what might have happened to James. Before they found his remains, search teams had already found some of his belongings. It included his wallet in the water and his phone, due to unrelated police activity. Meanwhile, witnesses say he was last seen walking alone after leaving the nightclub in the early hours of the morning.
Another report suggested that he might have headed towards a rocky area near the coastline that could be dangerous, especially at night. At the same time, police did extensive searches using divers and marine units in the days leading up to the discovery. Initially, these efforts returned no results, but continued operations eventually led to the recovery of his body. Yet, they have found no signs of struggle, assault, or forced interaction.

On the night of March 17, 2026, he visited one of his friends during a spring break trip. The 20-year-old had gone to the popular Shôko nightclub located along the beachfront. According to his friends, James was separated from his group at night and was last seen at 3 a.m. outside the venue.
When he did not come back, and no one could reach him, his family reported him missing. Therefore, the Spanish authorities began a large-scale operation. They reviewed surveillance footage, interviewed witnesses, and searched coastal areas, particularly near Port Olímpic. Eventually, his belongings were narrowed down to the place where his body was found.
James Gracey was a junior at the University of Alabama. He was studying accounting honours. The 20-year-old originally hailed from Elmhurst, Illinois, where he was known for being responsible, kind, and deeply connected to his family. Moreover, he was an active member of Theta Chi fraternity, where he held leadership roles including chaplain and philanthropy chairman. After he had gone missing, his family revealed in their statements that his disappearance was not normal for him due to his strong sense of responsibility. In their words:
"Jimmy is a kind, responsible, and devoted son and brother. It is completely out of character for him not to check in with family and friends."
