Notably, the identity of India as a cricket-loving nation is usually believed to be one of the main reasons. But the reality is very different compared to what people think right now. Meanwhile, a lot of people are unaware of the truth that the Indian team once qualified for the FIFA World Cup. However, they could not play. Keep reading to find out the reasons!

When did India qualify for the FIFA World Cup?

India undoubtedly came to be known as a cricket-loving country over these years. While India’s absence at the FIFA World Cup has created a different kind of debate, the Indian team had once qualified to play during the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. India got the opportunity as a result of a few teams withdrawing from the event, including Myanmar, Indonesia, and the Philippines. India was able to enter the race without playing a qualifier against other teams like Sweden, Italy, and Paraguay.

Why could India not play at the 1950 FIFA World Cup?

The Indian footballers once struggled to play the game barefoot. This was even believed to be the reason why the team did not make it to the FIFA World Cup. However, this was not the truth, and even experts have agreed on the same. Instead, there were multiple other factors that contributed to India’s withdrawal from the FIFA World Cup 1950 despite being qualified.

The first reason was the traveling costs. Indian players had to be sent to Brazil, which was a very expensive thing to do in 1950, considering that India became an independent country only three years before the team qualified. Furthermore, the team did not have sufficient time to undergo training and prepare for the main challenges during the matches. On the other hand, the All India Football Federation, also called AIFF, allegedly prioritised the Olympics, and there was little knowledge about the reputation that the FIFA World Cup brought with it.

AIFF has yet to take an important step to ensure that India plays at the FIFA World Cup

The debate of India’s absence at the FIFA World Cup emerged when the event started a few days ago, on June 11, 2026. The AIFF has maintained silence on the matter for all these years. While the Association has tried to keep the game relevant by launching the Indian Super League (ISL), the situation of the event has changed now as a new season has been delayed due to the failure to attract bidders for a partnership, leading to more profits.

However, a few footballers have still opened up on what is going on and what can be done. Former national team captain, Baichung Bhutia, said that while India can play at the FIFA World Cup, it needs a lot of hard work at the same time. He further stated:

“What is lacking in the right ecosystem as we don’t have the serious grassroots programme with a long-term vision. It’s the most popular team sport in the world and we will need time for the results to show.”
