Heath Ledger's cause of death and final moments

On January 22, 2008, Heath Ledger was found lying in bed in his Manhattan apartment. His housekeeper first came in around 12:30 pm. She noticed him but thought he was still sleeping. Later, around 3 pm, his massage therapist, Diana Wolozin, arrived for an appointment. When she could not wake him, she realised something was wrong. She called emergency services and followed instructions to perform CPR.

Paramedics arrived quickly and tried to revive him using medical equipment, including a defibrillator. Despite their efforts, Heath Ledger was declared dead at 3:36 pm. A full report from the New York medical examiner later confirmed the cause of death. It was ruled as accidental. He died due to acute intoxication from a mix of prescription drugs. These included anti-anxiety medicines, strong painkillers like oxycodone and hydrocodone, and sleeping pills.

People close to him had already been worried. He was having trouble sleeping and was under stress from work and travel. His father, Kim Ledger, later told news.com.au that the mix of medicines slowed down his body too much. He also shared that Heath’s sister had warned him just a day before about mixing certain drugs. Kim Ledger expressed by saying:

“It just put his whole system to sleep, I guess. It was a one-off thing. That’s what killed us, because he was warned by his sister the night before, You shouldn’t mix what you’re taking for pneumonia with your Ambien.”

Heath Ledger’s outdated will and Matilda’s estate details

Another detail that came into focus after his death was Heath Ledger’s will. It had been written in 2003 in Australia, years before his daughter, Matilda was born. Because of this, the document did not mention either, Michelle Williams or Matilda. According to the will, all of his assets were left to his parents and his three sisters. At that time, his known assets in New York were listed at less than USD 145,000, including a car and some personal belongings. This created concern at first, as many expected his daughter to be the rightful heir. But the situation was handled quickly and with care by his family. His father, Kim Ledger, later spoke to PEOPLE and made the family’s decision very clear. He was quoted as saying:

“Our family has gifted everything to Matilda. That was the plan from the moment my boy passed away. There was never any question about the fact that Heath’s estate would go to Matilda. Never a question.”

This decision ensured that Matilda was fully supported. The family also stayed close to Michelle Williams, maintaining a strong and respectful relationship. Since then, Michelle Williams has moved forward in her life. She later married theatre director, Thomas Kail, and they now have two children together. Still, Heath Ledger’s memory remains deeply connected to Matilda, who was just two years old when he passed away.
