After several days of online discussion, Clay Matthews sat down for a chat on TMZ Live to clear the air. He looked like his usual self and explained that the viral images were a part of a promotional campaign. In fact, they did not reflect any actual cosmetic procedures.
For those who do not know, the pictures showed Clay with an exaggerated jawline, changed facial features, and an overall unusual appearance. Needless to say, it quickly caught the attention of many fans who admitted that they could not recognize him.
According to Clay, he used prosthetics and professional makeup to achieve the look temporarily. There was no surgery or AI modification used to create the same. Overall, it took him around four hours of sitting in a makeup chair to achieve the look.
The former linebacker, who was new to makeup, joked that the experience made him appreciate the actors who often undergo lengthy makeup sessions for film and TV projects. He also acknowledged it was entertaining to watch the public reaction to his new look. Clay had earlier intensified the online debate by sharing a playful message on social media claiming he had "some work done," which further made fans believe in the transformation photos.
Later, Clay explained that the look was created for a marketing campaign for Caesars Sportsbook. It was designed on the lines of a new internet trend, better known as "looksmaxxing," where people discuss ways to maximize their physical appearance. So, Clay's exaggerated makeup was intentionally over-the-top. In fact, they intended to inspire comparisons to internet "Gigachad" memes. In his words:
"For whatever reason, there's this whole looks maxing phase, you know, with a more symmetrical jaw and chiseled, you know, who knows."
In turn, some people had begun to compare the former linebacker's appearance to cartoon characters due to his usually large jawline. As the rumors continued to grow, Clay came forward to reveal the truth and explained how it was a completely creative ad concept.
Clay Matthews might have retired from professional football years ago, but he remains close to the sport. The former Super Bowl champion recently accepted an important broadcasting role for Netflix's expanding NFL coverage. At present, he works as a studio analyst who gives expert insights before, during, and after the games.
He works with a high-profile team consisting of host Elle Duncan, Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin, and former Super Bowl MVP quarterback Nick Foles.
