Brad Pitt could soon face another painful setback because his youngest son, Knox Jolie-Pitt, is reportedly considering dropping his father's surname. Although the 18-year-old has not filed paperwork, sources claim that he may soon begin the process. If Knox does apply to remove his father's surname, he would become the fifth of Brad and Angelina Jolie's six children to distance themselves from the Pitt surname.

Knox Jolie-Pitt may be the next to drop his father's surname

According to a source who spoke to Page Six, Knox has not started any formal proceedings to remove his father's surname. However, he is expected to soon make the changes. In the source's words:

"Knox hasn't filed anything yet, but it's only a matter of time before he drops Pitt from his last name. It's inevitable. It's just a question of when, and there's no timeline for that right now."

The source also described that situation could be "heartbreaking" for Brad. Knox, the actor's youngest son, has also started using his mother's surname in public. At his June 2026 graduation from Fusion Academy in Los Angeles, his diploma reportedly listed his name as Knox Jolie and not Knox Jolie-Pitt.

Notably, the update comes just days after Knox's twin sister, Vivienne, legally removed Pitt from her name. A Los Angeles judge approved the petition to change her name from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie in November 2026.

For those who don't know, Knox has reportedly planned to follow similar decisions made by four of his siblings. Their eldest brother, Maddox, 25, legally became Maddox Chivan Jolie in September 2026. Previously, he was credited professionally as Maddox Jolie while working on his mother's film, Couture.

In fact, their sister, Zahara, 21, also legally removed Pitt from her surname in September 2026. Before that, she began to introduce herself as Zahara Marley Jolie during her Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority induction ceremony in 2023.

Later, she used the same name at her college graduation. Meanwhile, Shiloh, 20, was the first sibling to take formal legal action. She had filed a petition to remove Pitt from her surname on her 18th birthday in May 2024. Eventually, the request was approved in August of the same year.

Vivienne's also began the professional use of Jolie as her surname in 2024. She was credited as Vivienne Jolie in the Playbill for the Broadway production of The Outsiders, which she helped her mother produce.

Although none of the kids have mentioned any personal reasons for their name changes, the decision has attracted a lot of attention due to the family's estrangement. Brad's camp has described it as evidence of alienation. However, insiders close to Angelina say that the kids have their individual reasons for making their choice.

Meanwhile, Pax, 22, seems to have a different bond with the wider Pitt family. Sources previously told Page Six that he is in contact with his father's relatives. In fact, he also attended family gatherings. Still, his relationship with Brad remains distant.

Why did Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie separate?

Brad and Angelina's relationship started in the mid-2000s, and they tied the knot in 2014. They share six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne. Eventually, their marriage ended in September 2016 when Angelina filed for divorce after an incident aboard a private flight. She alleged that Brad had been verbally and physically aggressive towards her and some of their kids.

The actress mentioned that it particularly happened during their flight from France to Los Angeles. But Brad denied the allegations, and the FBI did not pursue any criminal charges after investigating the case.

Later, Brad admitted that he was struggling with alcohol and worked towards sobriety. The former couple's divorce was finalized in December 2024, after a long dispute. At present, they are still involved in a separate legal battle over their French winery, Château Miraval.
