Fans have been eagerly waiting for the high-octane war drama that revisits themes of sacrifice, patriotism, and brotherhood. Border 2 has provided greater clarity on the historical perspective than ever. It showcases the Indian Pakistani relations, the 1971 India-Pakistan war and how all the wings of the Indian defence forces- the Army, Navy and Air Force came together collectively.

Border 2 is based on the Indo-Pak war of 1971 that had lasted for 13 days and had resulted in the formation of Bangladesh. In relation to makers making fictional stories, Border 2 has heavily relied on real-life heroes. Well, whose character did Diljit Dosanjh play in the movie? Before the release of his movie, Border 2, Diljit had taken to his Instagram handle to share behind-the-scenes snaps from the sets of Border 2. The first snap showed him as an IAF officer, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, who looked confident in his uniform. The carousel of pictures also had his behind-the-scenes moments from the shoot. He was also seen standing with a statue of martyred IAF legend, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon. The moment felt very powerful, and in the caption, the star spoke about the late IAF officer and penned:

"Bahut hard work kita sari team ne. Baba bhaag lavey. Anurag bai di 2 saalan di mehnat aa. Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon is the only Indian Air Force Officer who received the Param Vir Chakra. Film vich mainu ona da kirdar karan da mauka mileya. Mere laai maan wali gal aa shuka."

Who was IAF legend, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon?

For the unversed, Flying Officer, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon is the sole recipient of the Param Vir Chakra in the Indian Air Force. Diljit has played the role of the officer in the movie. It was during the 1971 war that Sekhon had single-handedly fought the enemy air atta** at the Kashmir airbase. He had kept the airbase free of enemy aircraft attac**. Flying Officer, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon was from Ludhiana. Reportedly, more than 93,000 Pakistani soldiers had surrendered, which made it the second biggest military surrender post World War II. The film extends beyond the Longewala battle.

Flying Officer, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon was born in a small village in Rurka, Punjab and was commissioned in the IAF on June 4th 1967. It was on December 14, 1971, when Flying Officer Nirmal at Srinagar took off in his 'Gnat' while the airfield was under intense attack. He fought six F-86 Sabre jets, shot down one, set another one ablaze, before being outnumbered. Nirmal showcased supreme gallantry, outstanding flying skills, determination and sublime heroism, he was awarded with the Param Vir Chakra.

Flying Officer, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, grew up in a close-knit family

Flying Officer, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon had shown unparalleled courage when Pakistan had launched a sudden attack. He did not receive any formal orders but did manage to destroy enemy jets before his own aircraft got hit, and he was martyred. He showcased extraordinary courage and became a symbol of the fearless spirit of an India officer. Flying Officer, Nirmal was born on July 17, 1945, and his family had close ties with the Indian Air Force.

Flying Officer, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon's dad had served as a Master Warrant Officer and also the Honorary Flight Lieutenant. Since his youth, Sekhon had a passion for flying, which defined his life. After completing his early education, he joined the prestigious National Defence Academy and later completed his training at the Indian Air Force Academy. Flying Officer, Nirmal had graduated into the No. 18 Squadron called the 'Flying Bullets'- a unique fighter unit. Flying Officer Nirmal had a short but heroic career dedicated to serving the nation.

Amardeep Singh Sekhon is the nephew of the late officer, Nirmal Jit Sekhon. Flying Officer Nirmal's paternal uncle, who is the younger brother of the officer's late dad, is Jagjit Singh. Amardeep, in an interview with the Indian Express shared that Nirmal Jeet Singh Sekhon was a hero and his entire family is proud of him. Amardeep shared that flying officer Nirmal's parents died. Speaking of his wife and family, Amardeep shared:

"He was my paternal uncle (father’s brother). His parents have died. His wife remarried after his death. The couple had no children. So I being his nephew, is in the possession of his Param Vir Chakra. He and my father were only two brothers. We were told that his remains were found amid his plane’s wreckage and the IAF had performed his last rites."
