Apple TV has brought a brand-new crime thriller miniseries named Lucky, and fans are super excited for it. Is Lucky based on a true story?

Lucky has been hogging the headlines ever since it was released on Apple TV on July 15, 2026, and fans have been curious to know whether the miniseries took inspiration from real events. It seems that Lucky is not based on a true story but rather an adaptation of Marissa Stapley's book of the same name, which was released in April 2021. Three years later, Apple TV announced that the series was in development. The cast member, Reese Witherspoon, also issued a statement at the time that read:

"Reese's Book Club began with the goal of deepening connections—to the stories, to the storytellers and to the community we are building. It is incredibly rewarding to be able to amplify these female-centric stories and their authors, see our community connect with them, then see them take on a whole new life on screen."

Reese also reflected on Anya Taylor-Joy being cast as the lead in the miniseries. However, it is the first time that the actress has been an executive producer on a TV show. Reese revealed that Anya was the first person they shared the book with, and even though it's her debut as a producer, she is someone who "cares deeply, connects viscerally to the character." Reese added:

"We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Apple TV+ and the incomparable Anya Taylor-Joy, plus our brilliant creator Jonathan Tropper and his wonderful co-showrunner Cassie Pappas, to bring this compelling series—based on Marissa Stapley’s fantastic novel—to audiences around the world."

Why Lucky has become the audience's new binge?

In a conversation with L'Officiel, Anya Taylor-Joy also got candid about what drew her to the titular character 'Lucky'. She revealed she was attracted to play somebody who was "just so desperate to stay still and put down roots and form some kind of attachment where she didn’t feel like the ground was going to fall away from underneath her".

While Anya admitted that the character and her experiences might not feel relatable to all, she takes immense comfort in her drive for comfort and stability as a way to connect with and understand 'Lucky'. She added that, for her, it was the loneliness, despite 'Lucky's' fast-paced, high-stakes life, that she found extremely intriguing. She added:

"I think there’s been such a glorification of the hustle and the con, where we see it as very slick and jazzy and sexy. I was intrigued by the idea of: What is this actually like if you can’t form any attachments to anybody? If you can’t even give people your real name, how does that feel?"

What further makes 'Lucky' extremely relatable is Marissa Stapley's own experience and inspiration for the character. In a July 2026 essay for PEOPLE, she wrote about the two times when her mother was conned: once by a couple who took her life savings and twice by a cancer diagnosis. She also writes about how both brought Stapley to this character and the story that is now an Apple TV series.
