Alan and Catherine's separation marks an end to a relationship that lasted for 20 years, beginning when they were both in their teens. Alan and Catherine got married in 2006, and before that, there was their adorable dating phase, which also featured a brief breakup. So, amid Alan and Catherine ending their marriage, here's a look at their love story.
Alan Ritchson and Catherine met when he was 17, and she was 16. The couple met at a ballet class and dated that summer. Speaking about the same in 2023 on The Road To Wisdom, Catherine shared that the first meeting with Alan was something that she would never forget. The couple met at the class, and Catherine, possibly being awestruck, turned to her friend and asked, 'Who's that?'
The couple eventually started talking and then dating. Speaking to Men's Health in 2024, Alan revealed how he gathered the courage to ask her out and, before that, figured out what she liked with the help of a friend. Alan recounted the story and said:
“After the millionth time of us sitting next to each other, inches away, tying our shoes — so now it’s super awkward — I was like, ‘So I heard you ice skate.' She was like the sweetest thing in the world.”
Alan and Catherine started dating, and eventually broke up as a teenage couple by the end of that summer. Catherine revealed that she lived 30 minutes away, and the fact that Alan couldn't afford gas led them to part ways. According to Catherine, her boyfriend, Alan, back then assumed that their relationship was just a fling. Even though they ended things, they got back together again when Catherine was studying at the University of Florida.
Alan came to town for a modelling shoot, and there the couple reconnected and were together from then until their separation. Alan and Catherine got married in 2006, and 6 years later, they welcomed their first child, a baby boy, Calem. Alan and Catherine welcomed their second son, Edan, in 2013. The duo became parents once again in 2015, when they welcomed their third son, Amory. Back then, Alan called his wife 'the strongest person' for making it through her pregnancy.
Alan and Catherine had been each other's biggest supporters throughout all these years. In an adorable 2022 post, Alan joked about the lessons from marriage, saying that it's about finding 'your spouse's faults and there's nothing you can do about it'. He mentioned:
"I never dreamed all those years ago, when we were getting married, that 16 years later we would be living the kind of life where we could afford any car in the world and she would still insist on driving a minivan. But that’s just who she is. If marriage has taught me anything, it’s that you will continue to learn about your spouse’s faults and there’s nothing you can do about it. You just have to drive the minivan. Because you promised no matter how bad it got you would drive a minivan if she made you (until one of you dies).”
As of 2026, Alan and Catherine have decided to end their two-decade-long marriage as they are giving each other space to grow into individuals that they have become. The couple will focus on co-parenting their kids, as reported. The reason for Alan and Catherine's divorce was not known. Later, in a report, TMZ revealed that it was Alan who filed for divorce back in December 2025, and it was not a snap decision.
