Akka plot recap

In Akka, the kingdom of Pernuru succeeded in creating a matriarchal society after several men had perished in a war. The women, led by three sisters, began wielding power. Since then, a tradition began where three sisters rule over three parts of Pernuru, including Marmela, Perplady, and Harkada. The tradition, which has endured the British Raj and the creation of modern India, faces a threat after the mafia sees a sudden rise in the 1980s.

‘Bhavani’ is the current leader of Akka of Marmela. It is revealed that she primarily earns her wealth through legal alcohol tenders. Her conflict with her cousin brother, a man named ‘Amar,’ sets the stage for something bigger. The leader of the Mumbai mafia, ‘Shankar Dada' gives the task of taking over Pernuru to his trusted assassin, ‘Rudra,’ while taking the help of ‘Amar.’

‘Rudra’ has a rather simple strategy to accomplish her task. She intends to turn the forces from the inside against each other. She easily turns power-hungry men who constantly feel emasculated while living in Pernuru into her allies and uses them to disrupt ‘Bhavani’s’ trade networks. After she replaced them with cheaper and more dangerous products, the blame fell on ‘Bhavani,’ leading to her arrest.

‘Rudra’ takes things a step further by having ‘Bhavani's' mother assassinated, officially declaring war on the sisterhood of Pernuru and their authority over the lands. The reason for ‘Rudra's’ hostility is later revealed through a series of flashbacks. As it turns out, she is ‘Bhavani's' cousin, and her mother was a poor, tribal woman.

Since Pernuru’s culture opposes marriage, ‘Bhavani's’ uncle was not allowed to marry ‘Rudra's' mother, and he ended up taking his own life. As punishment, ‘Rudra's' mother has to escape the country with her tribe, the Jherum, because they were cast out of society.

Akka ending explained: Can ‘Bhavani’ defeat ‘Rudra’?

Soon, ‘Rudra’ launches another offensive where she succeeds in assassinating the majority of Pernuru’s key leaders. As a result, the men take over their position. Despite this threatening ‘Bhavani’s’ rule over the land, Akka ends with the former defeating ‘Rudra’ and consolidating the country of Pernuru. Even when it feels like the three sisters’ reign has come to an end, ‘Bhavani' finds an ally in the Kathava tribe of warrior women.

They were famous for their service to the Akka when ‘Bhavani's' mother ruled the land. The sisters had originally tried to suppress the Kathava’s indigenous deities and cultures. They were stripped of their position when they revolted. The generations that survived became powerful and adept at asymmetric warfare, and this is exactly what ‘Bhavani' needed at her time of peril.

She has a sincere conversation with the Kathava and promises to restore their dignity as soon as she is able to. ‘Bhavani's’ victory is solidified when the tribe enters the fight. Meanwhile, ‘Rudra' is left cornered and out of options. She takes her own life with a cyanide pill. This was reminiscent of her introductory scene, where she killed a person in a similar manner.

The biggest revelation comes after ‘Rudra's’ death and in the mid-credits. ‘Shankar’ is reintroduced as the main antagonist, and it is revealed to the audience that he is actually ‘Bhavani's' father. The story ends while raising several new questions about their connection.
